Quick Summary

We are looking for a Physics Lab Technician / Experimental Technician (m/f/d) in a permanent employment and fulltime capacity. The ideal candidate will work independently on complex lab setups across optics, electronics, RF/microwave, precision instruments, and collaborate with data scientists and physicists to execute measurement campaigns.

Job Description

Description:
At QuantumDiamonds, we turn quantum physics into real-world impact. We are looking for a Physics Lab Technician / Experimental Technician (m/f/d) in a permanent employment and fulltime capacity. In this role, you are the person who makes experiments happen: you will independently execute measurement campaigns defined by our data scientists and physicists on our quantum diamond microscope platform. Your work ensures that experimental results are reproducible, traceable, and high quality.
You will work hands-on with complex lab setups across optics, electronics, RF/microwave, precision mechanics, and software-controlled instrumentation. While the experimental goals and evaluation criteria are provided by the team, you take ownership of the execution, including preparation, calibration, stability monitoring, and documentation. You enjoy structured work, have a strong sense for systematic troubleshooting, and take pride in running experiments that others can trust.

Who we are:
Founded in 2022 as a spin-off of TU Munich, QD leverages quantum sensors to rapidly capture three-dimensional current maps within multi-layer chips. Our 30-strong team of physicists, engineers, and data scientists works side by side with major semiconductor manufacturers, helping them in chip debugging and accelerating their yield analysis. Backed by top-tier deep tech investors, semiconductor experts, and strategic public programmes, we have ensured long-term stability, shifting from breakthrough to scale - and shaping the next chapter in chip testing.

Why join us?:
Picture this:
• A machine that catches what others miss – in milliseconds.
• Physics, data, and engineering are working hand in hand to build tools that matter.
• An international team that loves solving hard problems and where knowledge flows fast.

Still unsure about why you should join us?
• You'll get to build a company together with a brilliant and welcoming team on a product that has never been done before.
• Our technology is the cutting edge of tomorrow, starting today and not in 10 years.
• You will work directly with major semiconductor companies from Day 1.
• You'll get virtual shares and act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just your own team.
• You’ll be part of a high-growth company backed by top-tier investors.

Let’s make the invisible visible!

What will you do:
• Independently set up, operate, and run experiments based on protocols and measurement plans defined by data scientists/physicists.
• Prepare lab systems for measurement runs: alignment, calibration, configuration management, and pre-run checks (e.g., signal levels, noise floor, drift/stability).
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as lasers/optics, detectors, power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, DAQ, RF components, temperature control, and precision positioning/mechanics (depending on setup).
• Monitor measurements in real time, ensuring data completeness and quality; identify anomalies (e.g., drift, saturation, misalignment, grounding issues) and take corrective actions within defined boundaries.
• Perform first-line troubleshooting and structured root-cause analysis; escalate clearly when issues require deeper hardware/software changes.
• Ensure excellent documentation: experiment conditions, configuration parameters, changes, and outcomes (so results are reproducible and comparable over time).
• Support continuous improvement of lab operations: standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, measurement automation, and reliability improvements.
• Collaborate closely with data scientists and engineers to refine protocols for robustness, throughput, and repeatability (without owning the overall experiment design).

What is expected of you:
• Several years (typically 4+ years) of hands-on experience working in a professional laboratory environment (industrial R&D, applied research institute, or advanced academic lab), with responsibility for running experiments or test setups independently.
• Fluent in English (both written and spoken), German is a plus.
• A hands-on technical background through one of the following paths:• Completed vocational training such as Physiklaborant/in, Elektroniker/in, Mechatroniker/in, or a comparable technical qualification, or
• A state-certified technical engineer background in any of the above fields, or
• A Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, or
• Equivalent practical experience in an industrial or research lab environment.

• Proven ability to work independently in a lab and execute complex procedures with high precision, reliability, and a strong safety mindset.
• Experience with experimental setups involving measurement electronics and instrumentation; ideally exposure to at least one of: optics/lasers, RF/microwave, sensors, vacuum/precision mechanics, or automated test environments.
• Strong troubleshooting skills: you work systematically (hypothesis → test → document), not by trial-and-error.
• High standards for documentation, reproducibility, and configuration discipline (you can tell what changed, when, and why).
• Basic data handling skills to sanity-check results (e.g., viewing time series/spectra, simple scripts): Python, MATLAB, or similar.
• Good communication skills in a cross-functional team; comfortable coordinating with data scientists/engineers and escalating issues clearly.

Nice to have (not required)
• Experience in semiconductor test, microscopy, precision metrology, or quantum technologies.
• Familiarity with LabVIEW, instrument control (SCPI), automation frameworks, or versioned experiment tracking.

Our benefits:
• Mission: At QD, we’re driven by more than just building great products - we aim to make a lasting difference. Joining us means contributing to meaningful work that goes beyond business as usual.
• Impact & growth: This is an exciting stage of our journey, and your voice matters. You’ll have the chance to shape our culture, influence key decisions, and grow alongside a company that’s scaling fast.
• Well-being & balance: We value rest and recovery. That’s why you’ll enjoy 30 vacation days plus public holidays to recharge and return inspired.
• Health & fitness: With a company-sponsored Wellpass membership, you’ll have access to countless gyms, classes, and wellness offers across Germany to stay healthy and active.
• Team & culture: We believe the best ideas come when we connect outside the office. From regular off-sites to team events, you’ll be part of a collaborative and supportive environment.
• Learning & development: Your growth is our priority. We provide an annual budget dedicated to courses, conferences, or any resources that help you expand your skills.
• Ownership & participation: As part of our equity program, you’ll directly share in our success and the value we create together.
