Job Summary/Objective
Obtains blood specimens from patients, assists in the processing of specimens, and prepares blood and urine samples for analysis by technologists.
Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
• Perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures on patients of all ages with accuracy and care.
• Collect and label specimens following established protocols to ensure proper identification and traceability.
• Willing to gain a knowledge of HCCH appropriate lab orders and provide accurate and timely order entry and collection information in the Laboratory Information System.
• Prepare blood and urine samples for laboratory analysis, adhering to quality control standards.
• Assist with specimen processing and documentation to facilitate timely and accurate testing.
• Perform waived lab testing when trained to do so, following protocols and participating in quality control measures.
• Maintain and restock supplies used in specimen collection and processing.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to prevent contamination or degradation.
• Follow infection control and safety procedures in all aspects of specimen collection and handling.
• Address patient concerns and provide information regarding the specimen collection process.
• Maintain accurate records of collections and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with laboratory technologists and other healthcare team members to ensure efficient operations.
• Assist Department Head with tasks as appropriate.
Skills/Abilities
• Proficiency in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling and documenting specimens.
• Knowledge of infection control and laboratory safety standards.
• Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain professionalism in a clinical environment.
• Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and software systems.
Education and Experience
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certification: Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.
• Experience: Previous experience in phlebotomy or a clinical laboratory setting preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during specimen collection and processing.
• Manual dexterity to perform precise specimen collection procedures.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment or supplies as needed.
