We're looking for a Peer Support Worker to join our Outreach Team!

To support individuals in accordance with the Housing First philosophy of immediate access to permanent housing with no readiness requirements, consumer choice and self-determination, recovery orientation, individualized and client driven supports, and social/community integration. As part of the Outreach Team, provide services to the homeless population in Peel Region, in particular, identifying people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and engaging them in services that support their challenges with mental illness or mental health and substance use.

To provide support to a caseload of adults (16 years old and over) with mental health concerns as they work towards recovery. To create, implement, facilitate and evaluate recovery topic focused, pre-vocational, vocational and life skills groups and activities within Hospitals.

Status: Permanent full-time. Shifts are 12 hours, 7:30am-7:30pm, 10am-10pm, working on a rotation of 3 days, 3 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off

Salary: $62,425.03 - $73,441.21 annually (Candidate qualifications will be considered when determining the starting salary)

Location: This position is based out of 60 West Dr, Brampton. Due to the nature of this program, this role is on-site and/or community based.

What You Will Do:

Provide short-term mental health and addictions consultation as follows:

Orientate new clients to the program

Establish a supportive, ongoing relationship with clients and their support systems

Conduct WRAP and Wellness-based Groups at identified drop-in & shelter locations throughout Peel

Develop a Wellness Plan with each client and their supports which will support and maintain client wellness

Contribute to comprehensive assessments with clients and their supports which identifies client strengths and needs

Establish and implement Recovery Plans to guide the mutual work towards client recovery

Provide on-going supportive counselling, life skills coaching, pre-vocational/vocational coaching and appropriate referrals that will enable clients to achieve their goals

Consult, advocate and liaise with community resources and agencies to assist clients in achieving their goals

Monitor clients’ mental health and initiating intervention to promote wellness

Provide education on mental health, illnesses and wellness to clients and their families/other supports

Provide ongoing support and referrals for families, as needed

Establish a follow-up plan for clients prior to discharge, when possible

Assist in the planning, implementation, facilitation and evaluation of groups, activities and client meetings

Actively engage clients in the daily activities of the program

Provide support with other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Join Our Team

College Diploma in Social Services or relevant Post-secondary education

Peer certification is an asset

Lived experience on a path to recovery is required.

Minimum 1 year of experience working with vulnerable populations (i.e. mental illness, addiction)

Experience facilitating and creating peer support groups is an asset.

Ability to connect and engage with clients with mental illness

Strong communication and conflict resolution skills; ability to connect with people one on one

Familiarity and knowledge of all programs offered by CMHA Peel, partnering agencies, and outside referral sources

Sound understanding of mental health promotion as part of a comprehensive mental health strategy

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with management and front-line staff using strong communication skills

Initiative and ability to work independently

Well-developed and demonstrated knowledge of mental health, mental illness, stress management, anti- stigma, workplace wellness, mental health system issues and health promotion principles (Knowledge of concurrent disorder, addictions, and dual diagnosis would be an asset)

Comprehensive knowledge of Recovery Principles, an asset

Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to approach, listen, build trust, and communicate across diverse cultures and intersectionality. Willingness to continually improve understanding around cultural competence 

Willingness to learn and apply practical understanding of different elements of diversity, such as gender identity/expression, race/cultural background, religion, sexual orientation, disability, immigration and precarious status, family status, etc.

Openness to operate from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, 2SLGBTQ+ affirming and intersectional framework 

Fluency in a second language, including ASL (American Sign Language) is considered an asset 

Valid Canadian driver’s license and access to an insured automobile in good repair 

Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check) report
