The peer advisors’ position within the Office of Student Success has multiple responsibilities. The Peer Advisor reports to the Dean of Student Achievement or their designee (Academic Advisors). The main purpose of this position is to advise a diverse body of majors educating them about academic and course advising resources & tools, career development resources & tools and experiential learning opportunities in order to help build students’ academic and career planning confidence, knowledge about their degree program and career options, and action plan to carry out their academic and career goals. Persons in this position must be willing to embrace each of the areas with equal enthusiasm and energy. General Orientation Responsibilities: Always represent the university as professionally as possible. Serve as an information source to all who utilize any of the services under the Student Success Centers. Maintain a high level of visibility, approachability, and enthusiasm at all times. Strive constantly to be accurate and honest in all communication. Always be respectful of fellow staff and student participants, irrespective of admitting status, gender, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, sexual orientation, disability status, etc.
Be willing to actively contribute towards and encourage positive staff interactions. Present positive relationships with staff members in front of students Attend all training sessions and staff meetings. Assist Student Success Center staff members in completing any clerical work as needed regarding the registration/orientation. Be available day, and evenings and weekends as needed throughout the semester, specifically during “Peak (Pre) Registration Periods.” A comprehensive understanding of the Advising/Registration, New Student Orientation process. Be willing to accept other duties/responsibilities as assigned; be flexible. Remember that this is a job to be taken seriously, not lightly. Have fun! Grow and learn! Advising Responsibilities: Become familiar with each individually assigned college curriculum. Aid in the development of class schedules and assist in the registration process. Maintain familiarity with the General Education Program Know various academic procedures (change of major, etc.) and be able to accurately communicate this information to students. Social Responsibilities: Assist in the planning, preparation for, and implementation of Summer Orientation social programming. Engage with students in various formats.
Encourage students to check their email and sign-up for social media. Actively seek out and engage students in conversations about UDC, Advising/Student Success and their transition.
