Paving Screed & Skid-Steer Operator
(Full-Scope Field Operator – Asphalt & Maintenance)
Position Overview
This role is for a highly reliable, versatile field operator who takes pride in doing the job right, helping the crew succeed, and staying productive regardless of task.
At Proper Paving, no one is hired for a single task only. Every operator is expected to contribute wherever needed to keep production moving safely, efficiently, and professionally.
This position primarily operates the paving screed and skid-steer, while also supporting paving, sealing, prep, and general site operations as required.

Core Responsibilities
Primary Duties – Screed Operation
Ensure screed is level and properly set prior to paving
Inspect paver and screed before paving begins
Assist foreman and paver operator with job planning, including:
Depth requirements
Drainage direction
Yield calculations
Assist with layout, measuring, and painting paving plans
Control material yield by operating flow control valves
Signal paver operator to start/stop as needed
Monitor material distribution for uniformity
Adjust screed angle and depth as required
Verify depth using depth gauges
Assist in cleaning asphalt buildup from paver
Secondary Duties – Skid-Steer Operation
Safely operate skid-steer with bucket, planer/milling head, broom, and attachments
Spread, mill, dig, and level materials
Load dump trucks with millings, gravel, asphalt, etc.
Operate small power tools (jackhammer, saws, etc.)
Perform basic equipment maintenance:
Greasing
Cleaning
Oil checks
Bolt and lug nut checks
Locate utilities prior to digging
Assist with training less experienced operators
Support foreman in meeting job specifications
General Paving & Site Duties (Required)
Shoveling and raking asphalt, gravel, and dirt when not operating equipment
Loading and unloading materials
Jobsite setup and traffic control
Maintaining paint lines and grade stakes
Jobsite cleanup throughout the day (not just at the end)
Assisting other crew members as needed to keep production moving
Sealcoating & Maintenance Support
Parking lot cleaning
Crack sealing and oil spot priming
Applying sealcoat with hand squeegee
Assisting with striping operations
Attendance, Conduct & Expectations (Non-Negotiable)
Reliable attendance is required
Excessive call-outs are not acceptable
Phone use is limited to designated breaks
Gambling, substances, or distractions on the job are prohibited
Negative talk, complaining, or undermining crew morale is not tolerated
Respect for foremen, coworkers, and equipment is required
Skills & Qualifications
Education & Experience
High School Diploma or GED
2–5 years of skid-steer operation experience in construction or paving preferred
Licensing
Valid driver’s license (required)
Class A CDL (plus, not required)
Knowledge & Abilities
Ability to read plans, measurements, and grade stakes
Understanding of asphalt paving methods and equipment
Ability to learn and follow direction
Basic math and tape measure proficiency
Ability to drive trucks and trailers safely
Knowledge of trenching, shoring, and load weights
Strong situational awareness and safety focus
Physical Requirements
Lift/carry 50–90 lbs regularly
Stand, kneel, crouch, and stoop for extended periods
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Maintain alertness around moving equipment and traffic
