Job Description

About Neuralink:

We are creating devices that enable a bi-directional interface with the brain. These devices allow us to restore movement to the paralyzed, restore sight to the blind, and revolutionize how humans interact with their digital world.

Team Description:

The Pathology Team at Neuralink plays a critical role in the evaluation of macroscopic and microscopic tissue samples derived from preclinical studies. Our team encompasses specialized units focused on Anatomic Pathology, Histology, and Digital Pathology, working collaboratively within the Preclinical Department to advance Neuralink's mission of creating a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow. As a Pathology Associate, you will provide critical, cross-functional support across our specialized cores, contributing to essential data capture and laboratory functions that are foundational to our preclinical research.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a versatile and highly motivated Pathology Associate to execute a range of essential tasks across the Anatomic Pathology, Histology, and Digital Pathology cores of our Pathology department. This individual will apply foundational laboratory skills to perform technical procedures, capture high-quality data, and ensure operational continuity, providing a broad support base for the pathology pipeline.

This role requires a proactive approach to learning, flexibility in responsiveness to prioritized needs, efficient completion of assigned tasks, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams to support Neuralink's ambitious goals. Reporting to the Pathology Lead, the Pathology Associate will work closely with Pathology Specialists across all cores to gain experience and contribute directly to study outcomes. Successful candidates will have a strong record of technical aptitude in a laboratory setting and a desire to learn and master new skills across multiple pathology disciplines. Additionally, you will be expected to:

• Perform foundational histological processes with precision, including tissue embedding, microtomy, and staining (e.g., H&E, special stains), to prepare high-quality slides for analysis.

• Assist in animal necropsies and tissue grossing procedures, ensuring high-quality sample preparation and documentation in compliance with study protocols.

• Operate whole-slide imaging (WSI) systems and conduct Micro-CT scanning to generate high-quality digital outputs for analysis.

• Execute precise data capture and analysis tasks, such as thread counting or assisting with algorithm tuning, to support data-driven insights.

• Support day-to-day laboratory operations, including the control of laboratory materials, supplies, and reagents, and assist with inventory system maintenance.

• Document experimental findings and procedures in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and laboratory SOPs, and provide feedback on SOPs to support process improvement.

• Proactively collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., Pathology cores, Pathologists, Veterinary Medicine, Preclinical) to ensure clarity and efficiency in study-related processes.

• Assist in aggregating data and generating image exhibits or similar materials for reporting purposes, ensuring accurate and timely study documentation.

• Actively participate in a culture of challenge and continuous growth by seeking feedback, embracing learning opportunities, and pushing boundaries to improve personal and team performance.

• Share resources and information with Preclinical Scientists and Pathology team members in an egoless manner, prioritizing team-over-individual stewardship of R&D projects.

Required Qualifications:

• BA/BS in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Neuroscience, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, or an associate's degree with equivalent experience.

• At least 2 years of relevant experience working in a high complexity laboratory environment.

• Adept at carrying out technical procedures within the pathology pipeline with minimal guidance, in a regulatory-compliant environment.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams within the Preclinical Department.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: histology/microtomy, necropsy, digital slide scanning, or immunohistochemistry (IHC).

• Experience with advanced or multimodal microscopic methods (e.g., confocal, lightsheet microscopy).

• Basic experience with 3D modeling (CAD) or rapid prototyping (e.g., 3D printing) for creating custom lab tools or fixtures.

• Proficiency in a programming language (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data analysis, image processing, or task automation.

• Demonstrated ability to design or engineer novel solutions to technical challenges and collaborate effectively with engineering teams.

• Familiarity with basic anatomy, physiology, and the ability to recognize tissue abnormalities during microscopic preparation or staining.

• Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (e.g., GLP, CLIA).

• Familiarity with basic anatomy, physiology, or neuroscience.

• Demonstrated ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced research environment.

Additional Requirements and Competencies:

• Ability to work flexible hours, including off-hours and weekends, to meet project deadlines and support team needs.

• Willingness to travel to and from other facilities as required, with travel not expected to exceed 6 weeks per year.

• Comfortable working in a controlled laboratory environment with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, biohazardous materials, and chemicals, including formalin.

• Ability to lift and maneuver up to 45 pounds to manage equipment, chemical waste, or other physically demanding tasks as required.
