Job Title: Parks Maintenance (Seasonal)
Department: Parks and Recreation
Reports To: Parks Manager, Maintenance Leads, Crew Leads, Parks and Recreation Director
Job Type: Seasonal, non-exempt (Hourly)
Pay: $14.50-$20.25 per hour
Hours: (Position will be for a 6 month period from date hired) (7am-3:30pm, October-March) (6am-2:30pm, April-September)
General Purpose
Performs a variety of entry-level duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, beautification, installation, repair and construction of parks grounds/amenities, cemetery grounds, trails, buildings and general environments; and other duties as assigned by the Parks Manager, Parks Maintenance Leads, Parks Crew Leads or the Parks and Recreation Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and follows the City’s mission statement, values and expectations.
Performs a variety of duties required to maintain City-owned grounds, parks, trails, cemeteries, open spaces and facilities.
Performs general landscape duties including mowing, aerating, weed-eating, seeding, decorating, weeding, leaf collection, snow removal, removing tree limbs and debris, pruning bushes, shrubs and flowers.
Assists with projects such as laying sod, re-seeding and planting and transplanting flowers, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers and trees.
Performs general cleanup of restrooms, bowery’s, playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, ball fields, facilities and trash throughout the park.
Performs other general landscape and gardening, including but not limited to: assisting in the installation of irrigation systems and repairs, select line sizes, sprinkler spacing, control equipment, installs tests and maintains system by inspecting and adjusting sprinkler heads.
Assists in the proper mixing and application of fertilizers, herbicides and other chemicals used in the care and maintenance of turf and landscaped areas. Wears the proper PPE equipment to apply the chemicals.
Assists in the preparation of ball fields including operating various small equipment to turn and prepare soil, chalk, mark out and paint fields.
Transports materials and equipment.
Operates a variety of types of small and light equipment such as: mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, pruning equipment, aeration tractor, seeder, sweepers, blowers and various hand tools.
May operate heavy landscaping equipment (not requiring a Commercial Drivers License (CDL)).
Performs general building maintenance; constructs and maintains bowery’s, small buildings and storage facilities.
Assures proper operation of lighting fixtures, doors, windows and plumbing.
May assist in framing painting, roofing or other skilled construction and maintenance activities related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete and masonry work.
Assists in proper installation and maintenance of playground equipment.
Helps winterize irrigation systems and various park and recreation facilities/amenities.
Responsible for the preventative maintenance, minor repairs and adjustment of equipment to ensure proper operation and safe efficient use.
Helps mark, dig and backfill burials in the cemetery.
May perform 'On Call' duties, periodically throughout the year, which includes: working as necessary on weekends, holidays and after-hours.
Maintains a productive working environment, including but not limited to: a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers and the public.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Parks Manager, Parks Maintenance Leads, Parks Crew Leads or the Parks and Recreation Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of maintenance equipment such as: mowers, aerators, trimmers and hand tools
Knowledge of landscape and sprinkler equipment
Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures associated with equipment operations
Knowledge of interpersonal communication skills
Ability to read and write
Ability to receive and follow instructions
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing among team members and with the public
Ability to develop positive and effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates and the public
Ability to prioritize multiple projects and manage interruptions
Ability to prioritize and organize workload to meet deadlines
Ability to watch indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
Ability to lift and move 40-80 pounds
Supervision Received
Works under the immediate supervision of the Parks Manager, Parks Maintenance Leads, Parks Crew Leads and the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director.
Supervision Exercised
Crew Leads will provide general supervision for various Seasonal Parks Maintenance and volunteer personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be sixteen (16) years of age or older
Must possess a valid Utah Class D Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's Motor Vehicle policy
Must obtain an Off-Highway Certification within fifteen (15) days of hire
One (1) year of experience, or more in a related field (preferred but not necessary)
Must pass a pre-employment drug test following a conditional offer of employment
Must pass a pre-employment background check if over the age of eighteen (18)
Additional Qualifications
(Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Knowledge of: horticulture, planting, cultivating, pruning and general care for plants, trees, shrubs and flowers; application of pesticides, fertilization, and soil amendments; drainage control, sprinkler system operation and maintenance, several types of heads, automatic controllers; maintenance of all grounds keeping equipment; reading of landscape drawings and blue prints; installation of parks.
Working knowledge of: various power tools and equipment; building repair techniques; safe work practices; types of equipment such as gang mower, front end loader, tractor, backhoe, dump truck, over seeders, aerators, thatcher, welder, trimmers, etc.; basic mechanics, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and masonry; landscape and sprinkler system design; flow pumps; herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and pesticides and proper application of them; turf and greens management; interpersonal communication skills.
Skilled in: identifying possible safety hazards and react accordingly, performing minor building repairs; communicating clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to: work weekends and holidays when needed and may be required to work longer shifts in emergency situations; maintain safe working conditions; respond effectively and make responsible decisions in emergency or unusual situations; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain good working relationships with employee's, supervisors and the public; perform manual or strenuous physical labor on a limited basis; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; maintain athletic fields at the highest competitive level.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to generally loud noise or very loud noise (ex. large earth-moving equipment, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, etc.) Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings and in all-weather conditions. Individuals are exposed to hazards associated with lawn and building maintenance including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles. Travel among worksites is required, which exposes the worker to the hazard’s incident to travel by vehicle.

Pay and Benefits
Pay
This position is Seasonal, Non-Exempt, Hourly. The Salary Range is $14.50-$20.25. Incumbents are typically hired at the minimum.
Park Maintenance (Seasonal) I - $14.50-$16.25
Park Maintenance (Seasonal) II - $16.50-$18.25
Park Maintenance (Seasonal) III - $18.50-$20.25
