Salary / Grade
£26,000 – £29,000 per annum
Additional shift allowance:
12.5% rotating Day / Late shift premium
33% fixed Night shift premium

General Description
A Paint Shop Prepper is responsible for preparing vehicles and components for painting to ensure a high-quality finish. The role involves sanding, masking, cleaning, priming, and surface preparation in accordance with industry standards and company specifications at Gemini Rail Services.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation
Sanding and smoothing surfaces prior to painting
Masking and protecting areas not to be painted
Applying primers and sealers
Applying safety decals and labels to passenger rolling stock vehicles
Inspection & Quality Control
Inspecting surfaces for imperfections
Reporting issues that may affect paint finish
Ensuring work meets required quality standards
Equipment & Materials Handling
Operating and maintaining preparation tools and equipment
Mixing and preparing paints and materials as required
Safe handling of hazardous substances in line with procedures
Coordination & Communication
Working closely with painters and team members to maintain workflow
Reporting delays, defects, or concerns to Team Leaders
Cleaning & Maintenance
Maintaining a clean and organised work environment
Performing routine equipment checks and maintenance
Safety & Compliance
Following all company safety procedures and guidelines
Wearing appropriate PPE (masks, gloves, coveralls, etc.)
Complying with environmental regulations and disposal requirements
Taking responsibility under the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to safeguard personal and others’ health and safety. Responsibility for safety cannot be delegated, although tasks may be supported or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
Strong attention to detail
Ability to follow instructions and work independently
Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
Understanding of safety procedures and workshop practices
Other Requirements
Flexibility to work alternating early and late shifts
Ability to pass a medical assessment
Qualifications & Experience
Essential: Previous experience in transport body repair or paint preparation
Desirable: NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent), though not essential
