Required Skills
Job Description
Staff Specialist / Senior Medical Officer – Paediatrics
Regional Queensland | Full-Time | Part-Time or VMO Interest Also Welcome
Looking for a paediatric role where you can make a genuine impact, enjoy real clinical variety, and still have a life outside of work?
We are supporting a well-established regional public hospital in north-west Queensland seeking a Staff Specialist / SMO Paediatrician to join its team on a full-time basis. We would also be pleased to hear from VMOs or part-time paediatricians interested in contributing to the service. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a key regional referral hospital with a broad scope of practice, strong community value, and a supportive team environment. The hospital is a CSCF Level 4 Specialist Service Base, has approximately 90 beds, and serves as the major referral centre for a wide north-west catchment, supported by a network of smaller remote hospitals and health centres.
The Role
You will join a paediatric service that offers meaningful, hands-on medicine in a setting where your contribution is truly valued. The department provides care for children from across the region and sits within a hospital that delivers a wide mix of medical, surgical, maternity, emergency, mental health and outpatient services. Previous public job material for this service also highlights a 15-bed paediatric ward and a 4-bed special care nursery, making it an appealing role for a general paediatrician who enjoys both inpatient and newborn work within a regional setting.
About the Hospital
This is not a small isolated facility, but a significant regional hospital with a genuinely important role in the health system. It has undergone redevelopment in recent years, including investment in a new Emergency Department, new Outpatients Department, Mental Health Unit and Paediatrics Unit, and it remains the principal hospital for the broader north-west region. Clinicians here benefit from broad case mix, close teamwork, and the kind of professional visibility and impact that can be hard to find in larger metropolitan systems.
Hospital is located in the regional Queensland town large enough to offer the essentials people actually care about: schools, shops, cafés, sporting facilities, airport access and a strong sense of community. It is the major service centre for the north-west, with a population of around 20,000, so you are not stepping into a tiny outpost.
There is a real outdoors lifestyle here, with space, sunshine and easy access to fishing, camping and weekend adventures. The local airport provides regular connectivity and makes FIFO-style or flexible travel discussions far more realistic than many doctors initially expect. It is also the kind of place where doctors quickly become part of the community and where their work is both visible and appreciated.
What we are looking for
We would love to speak with:
• FRACP-qualified Paediatricians
• Doctors eligible for specialist registration in Australia
• Paediatricians interested in full-time, part-time, or VMO-style arrangements
• Clinicians who enjoy regional medicine, broad practice, and working closely with a multidisciplinary team
Why this role stands out
Some regional jobs promise “lifestyle” but offer limited clinical interest. This one offers both. You will be joining a service where paediatrics matters, where the hospital plays a genuine referral role, and where there is enough scale to keep the work interesting without losing the supportive feel that makes regional practice so rewarding.
