Imagine working alongside over 1,000 top-tier engineers, architects, and planners, all dedicated to shaping the future of infrastructure and development.
The Overhead Catenary System (OCS) Engineer is a mid-to-senior level engineering role focused on the design, integration, and delivery of electrification systems for urban rail and light rail infrastructure projects in Hamilton, ON, Canada. This position operates within multidisciplinary rail systems teams, contributing to the development of overhead contact systems aligned with project specifications, safety requirements, and applicable railway standards.
The role spans preliminary and detailed design phases, with responsibility for technical coordination across traction power, civil, signaling, and rolling stock interfaces. Work includes BIM-based design coordination, requirements management, and participation in construction and commissioning support. The position requires experience in urban transit or tramway systems, with exposure to climatic design considerations such as extreme temperatures, ice loading, and wind conditions.
The ideal candidate brings 5–10 years of OCS engineering experience, strong systems integration capabilities, and familiarity with railway electrification standards and multidisciplinary delivery environments.
• Develop and formalize the design criteria for the OCS in compliance with contractual requirements, applicable standards, and industry best practices.
• Supervise and lead a team of engineers and designers during the preliminary and detailed design phases of the OCS.
• Ensure the technical integration of the OCS with other railway systems (electric traction, rolling stock, civil engineering, signaling, etc.).
• Manage the functional and physical interfaces of the OCS subsystem, in close collaboration with interface coordinators.
• Actively participate in the clash detection process and BIM integration to ensure spatial compatibility of the OCS with other disciplines.
• Track, manage, and close contractual and safety requirements related to the OCS using the project’s requirements management tools.
• Incorporate specific climatic constraints into the design (snow, ice, wind, large temperature variations, freeze/thaw cycles).
• Produce and validate technical deliverables: 3D models, drawings, reports, calculation notes, technical specifications.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning teams by providing technical recommendations and specialized follow-up.
• Ensure compliance with local and international railway standards, as well as applicable quality and safety standards for the OCS.
• Monitor the progress of design work, identify risks and critical issues, and report to the Systems Design Lead and Systems Engineering System Assurance Lead.
• Engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Railway Systems, or a related discipline.
• Proven experience (5–10 years) in the design, engineering, or implementation of OCS, ideally in tramway or urban railway projects.
• Strong knowledge of applicable railway standards for OCS (both international and North American).
• Good understanding of related systems: electric traction, substations, rigid or conventional catenary systems.
• Proficiency in CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.) and OCS calculation software (e.g., CATMOS, Sicat, or similar).
• Experience managing technical requirements in railway infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency in BIM platforms for coordination, modeling, and clash detection.
• Team management and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
• Good understanding of system integration processes and management of technical interfaces.
• Excellent communication skills in English (French is an asset).
• Strong organizational skills, technical rigor, and recognized leadership.
• Our ideal candidate is an experienced professional with a deep understanding of OCS system, systems engineering principles and practices, and a track record in project management.
