Job Description
Ophthalmic Technician
Who are we?
Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.
We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country.
We are thrilled to say that following an independently conducted survey of Newmedica colleagues to tell us what it’s like to work here, we have been certified as a Great Place to Work for the third year running. The feedback has directly contributed to Newmedica being listed among the UK’s top 50 Best Workplaces™ for 2025.
Role overview
We are looking for a new Ophthalmic Technician to join our Cheshire Oaks site. This will be 40 hours over 5 days per week including weekends on a rota basis. Ophthalmic Technicians play a key role in our daily eye clinics. They support the Clinical Consultant by triaging patients and helping to ensure the smooth running of the clinics, making sure patient appointments run to time and are conducted in the right manner. Over time, and with development, Ophthalmic Technicians can also run their own clinics.
Ophthalmic Technicians are trained to use all diagnostic equipment and will undertake clinic appointments and also act as a point of escalation if Ophthalmic or Clinic Assistants have queries or concerns.
The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients to deal with, so our Ophthalmic Technicians need to be empathetic and friendly and able to put patients at ease. They also need to be able to explain the purpose of the different tests to ensure the patient understands their treatment.
What skills and experience do I need?
Previous experience in Ophthalmology is essential, and the following things will be advantageous:
• Familiarity with optical diagnostic equipment and experience of undertaking a range of diagnostic tests
• Ability to undertake simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of imaging equipment or any apparatus within the clinic
• Experience of working under own initiative with appropriate escalation where required
• A competent user of computer systems and programmes
• An excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format
• A good team player – happy to jump in and support others when required
What we’re offering
• A salary of £30,000 - £35,000 depending on experience
• 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
• A company pension scheme
• Access to a range of benefits including free eye tests, discounted or free glasses, a free 24/7 well-being/counselling/advice service and a retail/technology discount scheme.
• An environment where your learning and development is supported through a range of various learning tools and courses.
• Working with a friendly multi-disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients
• A bright, spacious and modern working environment, built to the highest standards
