TL;DR:
We are looking for an Open Source Community Engineer to act as an on-site ambassador for a major public-sector open-source AI initiative built on Haystack. In this hybrid DevRel/Solutions role, you’ll provide technical expertise, nurture a growing community, and help shape the evolution of an emerging AI ecosystem. This role is based partly on-site at a partner innovation campus in Southern Germany.

What you will do:
As an ambassador for a large public-sector open-source AI initiative (built on Haystack), you will:
Technical Expertise & Support
• Provide hands-on expertise with Haystack and Python to advance and extend the open-source framework.
• Deliver expert-level support as the primary technical contact for users and stakeholders.
Implement patches, updates, and small product improvements to ensure stability and continuous enhancement.
Community & Ecosystem Development
• Build, nurture, and engage a local developer and user community around the project and its underlying stack.
• Create feedback loops by gathering input from users, institutions, and partners to help shape the product roadmap.
Develop capability-building materials (workshops, guides, demos) to increase adoption and understanding.
Outreach, Visibility & Partnerships
• Design and execute local awareness initiatives to increase visibility of the project and its value proposition.
• Organize and host events such as hackathons, meetups, and webinars to foster engagement and learning.
• Act as a liaison for public authorities, municipal partners, and institutional stakeholders to support collaboration.
On-Site Engagement
• Spend at least 2.5 days per week on-site at a partner innovation campus in Heilbronn, working closely with ecosystem stakeholders.
Requirements:
• 2+ years of experience in software engineering, AI engineering, or open-source development.
• Strong Python skills; familiarity with Haystack or other LLM/IR frameworks.
• Experience working with or in public sector environments is a strong plus.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to lead workshops, explain technical concepts clearly, and support users effectively.
• Comfortable working on-site in Southern Germany (minimum 2.5 days/week).
• Fluency in German and English.
Nice to have:
• Experience in DevRel, community management, or developer advocacy.
• Background contributing to open-source projects.
• Knowledge of vector search, NLP, LLMs, or retrieval-augmented architectures.
• Familiarity with public-sector procurement, data governance, or institutional collaboration.
• Experience organizing tech events, meetups, or hackathons.
