Narrative Designer

This role will be responsible for creating the narrative structure, writing screenplay, dialogues and assisting with implementation of cutscenes / quests inside the game engine (Unity). They will be part of a small design team and work closely with the lead game designer. They will collaborate with VO / mocap artists, level designers and assist with creation of in-game cutscenes that are in line with the vision and emotional experience of the game as defined by our creative director.

Responsibilities:

• Come up with an engaging narrative that evokes the desired emotional response
• Maintain pacing of the narrative to keep the player engaged

• Create and define characters, their backstory, motivations, etc. for the game
• Write screenplay and dialogues for in-game cutscenes, tutorials, NPC conversations
• Plan locations, characters, props, etc. that are needed
• Write content and flavor text (for UI), shouts and calls (for NPC) for quests / missions

• Work with the concept team to assist creation of storyboards
• Dictate camera angles, perspectives, shot composition, etc.
• Incorporate feedback from the creative director
• Iterate on storyboards as needed

• Collaborate with art (2D, 3D) team to assist with creation of assets for cutscenes / tutorials
• Iterate on assets / level with feedback from the design lead and the creative director

• Coordinate with VO / mocap artists / animators to create cutscenes
• Ensure that the desired emotional response is present in the delivered voice overs
• Collaborate with animators to get the right look and feel for the scene
• Collaborate with level / game designers to implement the cutscene in the mission / quest

• Playtest the quest / mission / tutorial with rest of the team after implementation
• Iterate on cutscene / conversation / tutorial as needed with the playtest feedback

Requirements:
• Experience working as a narrative designer
• Released novel or game, published short stories is a plus
• Strategy and / or premium games is a plus

• Experience creating screenplay and dialogue that evoke specific emotions
• Knowledge of narrative structures, character archetypes, writing styles is a plus

• Experience working with in-engine cutscene / quest creation tools
• Knowledge of Quests (Game Creator, Unity), Twine is a plus

• Experience working on cutscenes
• Experience working on plays / short movies is a plus

• Great understanding of player psychology
• Knowledge of architecture / poetics of space is a plus
• Knowledge of player psychology is a plus

• Keeps up to date with trends in narrative design for PC games

• Knowledge of a wide variety of narrative design principles is a plus
• Playing strategy games actively is a plus
