About the Role
This is primarily a front-end web development position.
The Multimedia Specialist is a key member of the Learning Design unit and plays a critical role in the development of high-quality, accessible, and engaging digital learning experiences at Bow Valley College. Working in close collaboration with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Learning Design Consultants, the incumbent designs and develop interactive digital course content deployed through the College’s Learning Management System (Brightspace by D2L).
This role directly supports Bow Valley College’s institutional goals of access, quality, and sustainability, and requires a strong blend of technical expertise, creativity, collaboration, and project coordination.
The successful candidate is flexible, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple projects while staying current with trends in digital media production, responsive and accessible web design, and online learning technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Web & Digital Planning and Development - 90%
Coordinate digital and multimedia projects, advising on web and media design while monitoring timelines, scope, and deliverables
Provide technical and creative expertise throughout pre-production, production, and post-production stages
Research, document, and implement digital project requirements and specifications
Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts, Learning Design Consultants, instructors, and stakeholders to plan, design, and develop course content
Review, revise, design, and develop digital learning content including lessons, interactive activities, and assessments
Identify opportunities where custom media and interactive content enhance learning outcomes
Design and develop user-friendly, visually appealing, and responsive web assets
Develop and maintain web templates and style guides to standardize content development
Ensure content aligns with web accessibility standards and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
Collaborate with the Copyright Office to ensure copyright compliance
Maintain awareness of emerging trends in user-centered design, UX, web development, and media production
Adhere to Bow Valley College policies, procedures, and guidelines
Course Preparation in the Learning Management System - 5%
Prepare and maintain course master shells in Brightspace (D2L)
Create and deploy learning objects and content pages within D2L
Organize course layouts for clear learning flow and logical module structure
D2L & Microsoft Teams Training and Support - 5%
Troubleshoot issues in existing courses related to system updates or post-deployment changes
Provide training and support to faculty and SMEs on Brightspace (D2L) and Microsoft Teams
Recommend alternative solutions when platform limitations affect learning objectives
Minimum Qualifications
Diploma in a related field
1-3 years of directly related experience
Intermediate to advanced skills in responsive web design, including hand-coding and troubleshooting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
High intermediate to advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Dreamweaver (or equivalent tools)
Strong project management, time management, and organizational skills
Experience working collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders
Proficiency with MS Office Suite and Learning Management Systems (D2L preferred)
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Portfolio demonstrating relevant work is required
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design, online and distance learning, and educational technology
Strong understanding of UX design, web and graphic design principles, and accessibility best practices
Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Advanced experience managing content in Brightspace (D2L)
Advanced experience using Microsoft Teams for collaboration and online instruction
Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Experience in Unity AR/VR an asset
Experience in video editing and Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects software an asset
Knowledge of Bow Valley College policies and procedures
