Quick Summary

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for SoC estimation in Eindhoven.

Job Description

Introduction

The Systems Innovation Automotive (SI A) of NXP Eindhoven focuses on first-of-a-kind system applications & system prototypes to demonstrate new applications and use cases based on NXP components. SI A is part of the Central Technology Organization (CTO), department System Innovation. The size of the SI A Eindhoven organization is about 40 FTEs.

Current SI A activities are:

• Car radar (>60GHz) applications
• Robotics
• Automotive Concepts & demonstrations: demo car (VW ID.4), event and trade show support
• UltraWideBand (UWB) applications
• Wireless Connectivity
• Standardization
• Electrification
• Student Teams Support

Context & Motivation

The automotive sector is a major revenue source of NXP. As the automative market transitions towards electric vehicles, so do the NXP portfolio. Recently NXP has added multiple Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) chipsets [1] to its portfolio and is in the process of promoting the solutions. An important aspect of this promotion is the multiple applications in which EIS can be utilized, such as battery state inference (SoC and SoH), temperature estimation and more. These multiple applications are possible due to the dependence of impedance on a multitude of variables, which is both a curse and a blessing. Kalman filters estimate battery SoC by combining models with real-time data, but they can be computationally heavy. This project investigates whether EIS can improve SoC accuracy or simplify algorithms to reduce memory and processing requirements.

Your profile

• MSc/BSc in Electronics or similar.

As part of the graduation project, the student will be expected to:

• Conduct prior-art research
Investigate existing literature and methods related to ECM fitting using EIS, with a focus on embedded applications.
• Implement resource-efficient ECM fitting method
Develop an ECM fitting algorithm using EIS, that is optimized for execution on resource-constrained Battery Management Systems (BMS), balancing accuracy and computational efficiency.
• Evaluate SoC estimation/computational efficiency performance
Use EIS-based ECM parameters within a Kalman Filter to estimate State of Charge (SoC) and compare the results against state-of-the-art methods reported in academic and industry publications ([2], [3]).

Duration

This is a full-time internship (40 hours per week) with a duration of 5 months or longer. The assignment could also be suitable as a thesis/graduation project.

The work is to be done on site, at the HTC 60, Eindhoven.

NXP offers a fixed contract of 16-20 hours a week. The number of working hours per week is to be defined prior start.

Collaboration & Support

The student will work closely with NXP Semiconductors and have access to internal resources, including hardware platforms and test vehicles.

This project will be carried out on-site at NXP Semiconductors on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, due to the required high-intensity knowledge transfer and supervision, as well as the availability of specific hardware and software tools. Working on this project implies working in a stimulating, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of technology, with knowledgeable colleagues, and an excellent infrastructure.
