Role purpose and overview
Telegraph Media Group is looking to recruit a Money News Editor to join its highly successful personal finance team on a fixed-term basis.
The ideal candidate will have experience in newsrooms, preferably on a national scale, and be an accomplished writer and editor. The Money News Editor will be an integral member of the Money desk, expected to drive our daily news coverage and work with reporters to ensure their stories are the best they can be.
We are looking for someone with a strong news sense and a solid understanding of personal finance and consumer topics. The ideal candidate will be full of ideas and energy, able to think of fresh ways to take on key topics of interest and hungry to set the agenda for money journalism.
You will work closely with other desk editors, particularly News and Business, to ensure priorities and targets are met. Experience of personal finance is essential, along with a keen eye for news angles and a love of great stories and headlines.
The role reports to the Money Editor and plays a central role in overseeing a large team of reporters and writers responsible for The Telegraph’s award-winning money coverage. The role will include early shifts.
Key responsibilities
The Money News Editor will:
• identify, commission and edit money news with a focus on exclusives, original reporting and adding value to drive subscriptions.
• liaise with the News and Business desks to make sure Money news stories are presented in the best way for different channels.
• compile the morning news list and update it throughout the day.
• drive original, informative and entertaining personal finance journalism
• work with reporters to stimulate ideas and develop stories to optimum effect
• develop campaigns and investigations that speak to the Telegraph’s audience and set the news and political agenda
• edit content for multiple channels including digital, print and newsletters
• help manage the flow of large volumes of content to meet an array of deadlines
• spot potential stories or digital projects from raw data, case studies or news
• use audience analytics to inform and improve idea generation and presentation
• play an integral role in what is a stable, happy and committed team
Key skills
The ideal candidate will be:
• an excellent writer and editor, as well as numerate
• knowledgeable in all fields of personal finance
• news-aware and alive to the interests of our audience
• full of original ideas
• highly organised, energetic and enthusiastic
Desirable:
• experienced in digital publishing
• comfortable with the use of analytics
