Modeling and Architecture Engineer, Energy Storage

Job Description

About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Modeling and Architecture Engineer, Energy Storage

You will be the technical lead of the Energy Storage Modeling and Architecture team, taking a hands-on role in the design, development, and integration of Redwood Energy’s second-life battery product. You will be the subject matter expert developing the multiphysics and technoeconomic modeling platform to drive the system design of this novel battery energy storage system. These models must be robust enough to size future projects with confidence, but agile enough to quickly drive a diverse array of design decisions.

You will also be responsible for operationalizing these learnings into an algorithm that controls how each battery pack is used within our sites to maximize the value extracted before recycling. This model will drive operational parameters, such as SOC windows and charge and discharge powers, as well as the decision about when to replace a pack and with what to replace it with.

The ideal candidate is highly self-driven, adaptable to a startup environment, and eager to take on novel technical challenges. They have experience leading modeling teams in battery energy storage or electric vehicle space but are still first principle thinkers with the ability to personally jumpstart new modeling efforts.

If you’re excited about working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting within a new department at Redwood, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities of the role:

• Technical leadership of Redwood Material’s in-house performance and technoeconomic model, including ownership of modeling roadmap and selection of modeling tools.

• Utilize the models to produce repeatable and dependable results for various stakeholders within the organization to drive product architecture and site-specific deployment decisions.

• Lead architectural studies to explore the cost and performance design space.

• Create a pack operational window and pack replacement algorithm, responsible for setting SOC and other operational limits for each pack to meet site objectives.

• Produce component-level sensitivity analysis to allow component owners to make globally optimal cost and performance tradeoffs.

• Lead model validation efforts by contributing to test plans and analyzing the results to quantify model uncertainty.

• Effectively communicate modeling study results to drive architecture and performance initiatives.

• Develop a consistent framework for reporting progress of model and component development as components go from conception to prototype to full production.

Desired Qualifications:

• BS or MS in Mechanical Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and 8+ years of model development or system engineering experience.

• Excellent first-principles physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and basic thermal mechanics.

• Hybrid or electric powertrain model development, PV model development, and data analysis in Python or MATLAB/Simulink.

• Experience with models which have multiple contributors collaborating together.

• Familiarity with basic controls techniques, such as filters and PID loops.

• Experience with system optimization tools.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
