Job Summary
Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Mine Operations Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective execution of all day-to-day open pit mining operations. The role ensures production targets are achieved in alignment with mine plans developed by the Mine Engineering team while maintaining high standards of safety, productivity, and equipment utilization.
The Mine Operations Superintendent provides leadership to the operations general foremen, supervisors, dispatch, and field teams to ensure that drilling, loading, hauling, dumping, and stockpile management activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and operating procedures.
The position works closely with the Mine Engineering, Maintenance, and Geology teams to coordinate activities and deliver planned production objectives.
Working Conditions
The Mine operations Superintendent position at the OKO West project site in Guyana will be a rotation-based role, offering flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the successful candidate’s location and personal preferences.
Key Responsibilities
1. Executive Mine Production Plans
Execute daily, weekly, and monthly mining plans developed by the Mine Engineering team.
Ensure production targets for tonnage, waste striping, and ore delivery are achieved.
Monitor pit activities including drilling, loading, hauling, and dumping operations.
Ensure proper ore and waste segregation in accordance with geological instructions.
Coordinate grade control activities with the Geology team.
Monitor stockpile management and ore routing to ensure proper material handling.
Identify operational bottlenecks and implement corrective actions to maintain productivity.
2. Supervise Mining
Lead and supervise mining general foremen, supervisors, dispatchers, and field personnel.
Ensure effective coordination of mining equipment including shovels, excavators, drills, and haul trucks.
Ensure safe working conditions including proper bench heights, berms, ramps, and traffic management.
Monitor equipment utilization and coordinate with the Maintenance team to optimize fleet availability.
Ensure efficient shift handovers and operational communication between crews.
3. Workforce Management
Ensure adequate manpower is available for all shifts.
Support training and competency development of operators and supervisors.
Promote teamwork, discipline, and accountability within the operations team.
Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching when required.
4. Health and Safety Expectations
Maintain a cooperative interest in the health and safety of yourself, fellow workers, and local communities. Follow all safety procedures and regulatory requirements. Ensure that all operational areas comply with company health, safety, and environmental standards.
Provide visible safety leadership and intervene when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed.
Requirements
Experience
Minimum 10–15 years of experience in mining operations.
At least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role in open pit mining.
Education/Certification/Designation
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field preferred.
Technical Skills/Knowledge
Strong experience in mining equipment operations.
Good understanding of open pit mining practices and safety requirements.
Experience managing large mining fleets and operational teams.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a remote mining environment on rotation.
