Why Box needs you:

We’re looking for Java Developers to join our E-Commerce Platform team, building the backend systems that power how customers purchase and manage their Box subscriptions.

This is a high-impact area, directly supporting a significant portion of Box’s revenue - where scalability, performance, and reliability are critical. In this role, you’ll design and develop high-scale Java services that enable seamless self-service experiences and support Box’s global expansion.

Current focus areas include:

• Modernizing our tech stack to boost performance and developer productivity

• Enhancing pricing and discount systems

• Expanding backend capabilities to drive new recurring revenue

Responsibilities:

• Develop high-quality, scalable, and responsive software using modern technologies

• Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code using industry best practices

• Work effectively with Designers, Product Managers and cross-functional global teams to deliver high-quality software and seamless user experience

• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure code quality and improve team efficiency

• Troubleshoot and debug software defects to ensure smooth functionality

• Collaborate effectively in an Agile development environment, participating in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives

• Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise

Who you are:

• 4+ years of professional software development experience in Java applying industry standards in software design, testing, and code review practices

• Hands-on experience building highly scalable distributed systems

• Enthusiasm for applied AI, including willingness to experiment with AI agents, tools, prompt engineering, and model integrations in product development

• Strong understanding of scalability and observability practices

• Ownership mindset with a commitment to delivering high-quality work, both technically and in team interactions

• Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software design

• Demonstrable experience guiding and mentoring high-performing engineering teams

• Experience leading cross-functional projects

• Proficient knowledge of software design principles

• Solid experience with automated testing principles and frameworks

• Professional proficiency in English

Preferred Skills:

• Prior experience in the e-commerce domain

• Experience working with distributed teams in different time zones

• Prior experience with PHP

Percentage of time spent:

• 40% coding

• 25% technical investigation

• 10% documentation

• 10% developer support and mentoring

• 15% meetings
