Miami Cass REMC is a not-for-profit electric utility owned by the consumer members who use the electricity and services we provide. We are headquartered in Peru, Indiana, just north of US 24 on US 31, and proudly serve Miami, Cass, and portions of Wabash counties.

The Groundman is an entry-level position that provides essential support to Linemen in the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and overhead power lines. This role assists with daily field operations, ensures proper care of equipment and work areas, and contributes to a safe and efficient work environment. The Groundman may also operate certain equipment and is expected to actively participate in safety programs and ongoing training.
Key responsibilities include assisting Linemen with construction and maintenance activities, maintaining tools, equipment, trucks, and shop areas, accurately tracking and submitting daily work hours, and adhering to all safety standards and procedures. This position requires the ability to work in physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments, including extreme weather conditions.
Education & Experience
• High school diploma or GED required
• Valid Class A CDL preferred
• CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Basic knowledge of tools such as chainsaws, chippers, and lineman tools, including proper maintenance
• Ability to operate or learn to operate equipment such as bucket trucks, digger trucks, trenchers, forklifts, and mini excavators
• Understanding of safety procedures, work orders, staking sheets, and utility maps
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Strong communication skills, including radio communication
• Basic math skills
• Ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure
Physical & Work Requirements
• Ability to work in noisy, hazardous environments and extreme weather
• Ability to climb poles and work at heights up to 60 feet
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain and carry at least 50 pounds
• Ability to lift, carry, or pull up to 120 pounds
• Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move throughout the workday
• Ability to work overtime, on-call shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Must live within 20 miles of the office
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
