Who we are | Ko wai mātou:
Awanui Labs is a part of Awanui Group, the largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories in New Zealand. At Awanui, we’re proud to be a national network of 25 laboratories, 150 collection centres, and employers of over 2,200 people throughout Aotearoa. Our team of specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared services personnel deliver a world-class service that together collects, analyses, and reports over 7 million patient results annually.
About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We are looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Haematology Department based at Wellington Hospital. This is a permanent, part-time position (7 shifts or 56 hours per fortnight) within a department that performs a wide range of routine and specialist diagnostic testing using the latest automated systems.
Our laboratory operates 24/7 and the rostered hours for this position would follow a pattern of:
3 days - Evening shift (1500-2300)
3 days - Rostered off
3 days - Night shift (2300-0700)
3 days - Rostered off
After a period of training and orientation this role would be a sole-operator position outside of routine operation hours, with on-call support at all times.
There are numerous advantages for staff employed to participate in this roster. Working seven instead of 10 shifts in a fortnight provides a work/life balance, especially suited for families, study, or other pursuits. Evening and weekend work attracts penalty rates and cumulatively, the income for this role works out to be greater than an equivalent full-time role (80 hours) worked during routine hours. In addition, a significant amount of shift and alternate leave is accumulated for working evening and night shifts, as well as weekends and public holidays (depending on when the shifts fall).
