About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Haematology Department based at our Christchurch Laboratory. This is a fixed-term, part-time position of 60 hours per fortnight, offering the opportunity to work within a busy and well-established diagnostic service, including rostered evening shifts as part of the role requirements.
The department performs a broad range of routine and specialist haematology testing using advanced automated systems and modern laboratory technology. This role is suited to someone who is keen to contribute to high-quality diagnostic services in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Carry out diagnostic testing within the Haematology Department.
Operate, monitor, and maintain automated laboratory instruments and equipment.
Ensure all test results are accurate, reliable, and meet established laboratory standards.
Adhere to quality assurance processes, safety guidelines, and infection control procedures.
Collaborate effectively with the wider laboratory team to support smooth workflow and service delivery.
Contribute to high-quality patient care by delivering precise and timely diagnostic results.

To be successful in this role you need to have:
Shows initiative and pays close attention to detail, including keeping accurate, consistent records and working in an organised way in the laboratory.
Has strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to stay calm and work effectively in busy, time-pressured situations.
Works well independently and takes a proactive approach to solving problems, while also contributing positively within a team.
Follows procedures and quality standards carefully, and identifies gaps in knowledge, taking steps to improve and learn.
Has a good understanding of laboratory operations, including safety procedures and equipment use, with ideally some hands-on experience in haematology.
Registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and holds a current practising certificate as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.
