The Mechanical Engineer will work with agility to design, develop, and validate innovative components and solutions for medium and heavy military and specialist vehicles, as well as a range of other tactical systems. Emphasis is placed on delivering reliable, customer-focused products that comply with industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD, DEF STAN) while supporting Thales’ commitment to excellence in defense mobility technologies.

KEY OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Mechanical Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring:
• Produce designs and solutions that meet customer requirements and applicable regulations
• Conduct prototyping, trials, and demonstrations of the solutions developed
• Create, interpret, and optimise precision 3D CAD models (structural, mechanical, electrical) using Creo Parametric
• Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to mitigate manufacturing risks and improve fit/form/function.
• Comply with all relevant company policies and procedures
• Design, develop, and validate components and systems for medium and heavy vehicles using appropriate tools and techniques, working independently or as part of a team under broad professional guidance
• Compliance with Export Control and Document Security; this role requires strict adherence to Thales Australia’s policies on export control (including DSGL, ITAR, and EAR regulations) and document security markings (e.g., classified or controlled technical data).
KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
• 5+ years of industry experience in a similar role
• Experience in design and manufacturing environments
• Knowledge of engineering materials in relevant area
• Knowledge of Tolerance Analysis, DFMEA, 3D CAD and PLM System
• A high level of interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
• Able to design mechanical or electrical systems and elements for military & specialist vehicles
• Developing low TRL capability concept studies and solution proposals and trade-offs
• Early system integration studies to feed back into the design process
• Understanding of quality systems and procedures.
• Able to perform first principal engineering calculations
• Able to interpret and analysis drawings and technical documents
GOOD TO KNOW
Prior to being offered employment, you will need to complete pre-employment police and (role dependent) medical checks. Applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to obtain NV1 security clearance.

The U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR) are applicable and as such, your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.
