About Your Role
CMTS is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support aviation, transportation, and public infrastructure capital improvement projects throughout the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) Region. This role will provide engineering support related to the planning, design, coordination, construction, commissioning, and operational integration of mechanical systems associated with complex infrastructure and facility improvement projects.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required
or
An equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant mechanical engineering experience where permitted by applicable regulations
What You’ll Need to Get the Job Done
5–12 years of mechanical engineering experience supporting aviation, transportation, infrastructure, or public sector capital improvement projects
Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, chilled water systems, heating systems, and mechanical infrastructure esign principles
Experience supporting mechanical design reviews, construction administration, commissioning, and field coordination activities
Knowledge of applicable mechanical codes and standards including ASHRAE, NFPA, IMC, IPC, IBC, and local jurisdictional requirements
Experience reviewing construction drawings, technical specifications, submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings
Ability to identify design conflicts, constructability concerns, operational impacts, and system integration issues while supporting resolution efforts
Experience supporting projects within active operational environments preferred
Strong analytical, technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare reports, technical documentation, and project correspondence
Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
Experience with mechanical engineering design and analysis software platforms preferred
Ability to travel throughout Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia project locations as required
What Will Make You Stand Out
Certifications / Licenses
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
EIT certification preferred for candidates pursuing PE licensure
ASHRAE membership or relevant certifications preferred
Experience supporting aviation or transportation infrastructure projects strongly preferred
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred

What You’ll Do
Support planning, design, coordination, and construction activities associated with mechanical systems for aviation, transportation, and infrastructure capital improvement projects
Review mechanical designs, drawings, technical specifications, calculations, and engineering documentation for compliance with project requirements and applicable codes
Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders to support project delivery objectives
Review and respond to RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, product data, and change order requests related to mechanical systems
Conduct field inspections and site observations to verify construction activities, installation quality, and compliance with plans and specifications
Support construction administration and commissioning activities including system testing, startup coordination, punch list reviews, balancing verification, and closeout activities
Analyze HVAC systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, chilled water systems, and mechanical infrastructure performance to support operational efficiency and reliability
Assist with troubleshooting technical issues, design conflicts, constructability concerns, and operational challenges associated with mechanical systems
Coordinate mechanical engineering activities with multidisciplinary project teams to support integrated project delivery
Monitor contractor compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and mechanical engineering specifications
Prepare technical reports, engineering summaries, field reports, meeting documentation, and project correspondence
Participate in design reviews, progress meetings, construction coordination meetings, commissioning activities, and stakeholder discussions
