Position Overview:
The Marine Mechanic inspects, maintains, and repairs boats and vessel systems. This job uses simple Six Sigma ideas: follow clear steps, reduce mistakes, solve the real cause of problems, and improve results over time. The Marine Mechanic works on engines, electrical systems, steering, hydraulics, propulsion, and related equipment to keep vessels safe, reliable, and ready for service.
Key Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include finding the root cause of equipment problems, doing routine maintenance, and repairing or replacing damaged parts. The Marine Mechanic follows standard work, uses checklists, and tests repairs before closing a job. This helps improve quality, reduce repeat repairs, and make vessel performance more consistent.
The Marine Mechanic works closely with the Port Engineer and Assistant Port Engineer to report problems, plan repairs, control parts, and keep the work area organized. The role also requires clear records, safe work habits, and following company, safety, and environmental rules. Good communication and accurate documentation help reduce delays and support continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Support the Port Engineer and Assistant Port Engineer with vessel maintenance and repair work.
Follow clear repair and maintenance steps so work is done safely and the same way each time.
Carry out preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance to reduce failures and downtime.
Inspect engines and vessel systems to find defects and identify the true cause of problems.
Use gauges, meters, and test tools correctly to make sure results are accurate.
Check completed repairs to confirm the problem is fixed before the vessel returns to service.
Inspect spare parts and materials before use to help prevent defects and rework.
Keep maintenance records, manuals, and technical documents complete and organized.
Help plan future maintenance jobs and prepare repair scopes for dry dock or service periods.
Report defects, risks, delays, and repeat issues quickly so action can be taken early.
Perform other assigned duties as needed.
Qualifications, Skills & Endorsements:
At least five years of marine mechanic experience or engine room sea time, in line with STCW requirements.
Good knowledge of marine engines, electrical systems, and vessel maintenance.
Able to read manuals, drawings, and schematics.
Strong problem-solving skills with focus on root cause, quality, and reducing mistakes.
Able to follow standard processes and complete work carefully and consistently.
Able to work alone and as part of a team.
Physically able to lift equipment and work in tight or difficult spaces.
Understands safe work practices, repair standards, and accurate recordkeeping.
Able to perform repairs on site, including under challenging conditions.
Available to work overtime and weekends when needed.
Manufacturer or repair program certifications are preferred.
Valid TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
