The External Communications team supports OpenAI’s mission by helping the organization communicate clearly, responsibly, and effectively with external audiences. The team works closely with partners across the company to navigate complex topics, manage evolving narratives, and ensure OpenAI’s communications reflect its values and long-term goals.

About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced communications manager to support fast-moving external communications and issues-related work across OpenAI. This role focuses on tracking external narratives, synthesizing information for internal stakeholders, and supporting communications efforts during moments that require sound judgment, speed, and clarity.

You’ll work closely with cross-functional partners including Legal, Global Affairs, Product, Research, and Leadership to help ensure OpenAI is aware of, and responsive to, evolving external conversations.

This role is based in San Francisco, New York, or Washington, DC. We use a hybrid work model of three days per week in the office and offer relocation assistance where applicable.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Supporting external communications and issues-related initiatives across media and digital platforms.

• Tracking and synthesizing coverage, online discourse, and emerging themes relevant to OpenAI.

• Preparing concise internal updates and briefs to support shared understanding and decision-making.

• Partnering with cross-functional teams to provide context and insight during fast-moving or time-sensitive situations.

• Helping teams stay aligned as external narratives evolve.

• Contributing to internal reviews and documentation to improve communications processes over time.
