Summary
The Building & Maintenance Manager is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of the CILA campus and performs hands-on custodial and maintenance duties. This position manages building systems, performs and coordinates maintenance and minor repairs, supervises custodial staff (as applicable), and serves as the primary point of contact for facilities-related needs. The Building & Maintenance Manager works closely with school leadership to ensure a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, and families.
Essential Job Functions
Opens and secures the building daily, including unlocking/locking doors and turning lights on/off as needed
Conducts daily walk-through inspections to identify cleaning, safety, and maintenance needs
Monitors building safety, security, and cleanliness throughout the school day
Performs general cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs
Cleans and maintains restrooms, sinks, floors, drinking fountains, and common areas
Checks and monitors building systems, including HVAC, boilers, and utility systems; reports concerns as needed
Sets up and breaks down tables and spaces for lunch, events, and school activities
Responds to facilities-related requests from administration, staff, and students
Maintains inventory of cleaning, maintenance, and safety supplies
Orders materials and supplies as needed and monitors expenditures within budget guidelines
Coordinates with outside vendors and district/contracted maintenance services for larger repairs
Performs outdoor maintenance including lawn care, snow removal, playground equipment checks, and seasonal tasks
Inspects playgrounds and outdoor areas to ensure student safety
Supports school events and community activities requiring facilities support
Maintains positive working relationships with staff, students, families, and community members
Ensures compliance with all state and federal safety standards, including OSHA requirements and MSDS/SDS safety regulations
Maintains proper documentation and ensures safe storage, labeling, and use of cleaning chemicals and materials
Other Duties
Performs related duties as assigned to support school operations
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of building operations, custodial services, and basic maintenance practices
Ability to manage daily building operations independently
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff, students, and families
Ability to work cooperatively as part of a school team
Skill in using custodial, maintenance tools, equipment, and materials
Ability to identify safety concerns and respond appropriately
Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations, including OSHA and MSDS/SDS requirements
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Previous experience in custodial, maintenance, or building operations required
School-based facilities experience preferred
Ability to pass required background checks
Organizational Relationships
Reports to school administration. This position does not include supervisory responsibility.
Working Conditions
The work is performed in a school environment. This position may require flexible hours to support school events, emergencies, or seasonal needs.
Physical Demands
The work is regularly active and may involve periods of heavy exertion. Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods; lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; climbing stairs and ladders; bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching; using hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; and the ability to see, hear, speak, and detect odors with or without reasonable accommodation.
