Métis Community Outreach Navigator – Calgary

Location: 124-1530 27th Avenue NE Calgary, AB

Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), 1 Year Employment Contract

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full time Métis Community Outreach Navigator to join the Justice Department. Reporting to the Director of Justice, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in leading efforts to combat trafficking crimes that affect women, men, 2SLGTBQIIA+ individuals, and children. The Métis Community Outreach Navigator will be responsible for supporting Métis Albertans who are involved in, at risk of, or transitioning out of human trafficking. This includes providing short‑term case management, safety planning, system navigation, cultural connection, and prevention education. This role requires a high level of empathy, professionalism, and cultural humility, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and Métis communities across Alberta. The ideal candidate is trauma‑informed, culturally grounded, and adaptable, with a strong commitment to survivor‑led healing pathways. They bring a deep passion for justice and advocate for the rights and well‑being of survivors and their families.

Key Responsibilities

Provide short term, trauma-informed case management, navigation, referral services, and supports to Métis Albertans who are involved in, at risk of, or transitioning out of human trafficking and exploitation.

Work with clients to develop individualized and goal-oriented transition and wellness plans, centered on client autonomy, cultural identity, and safety.

Advocate with and on behalf of clients to ensure they receive timely, culturally grounded, and individualized support, including incorporating disability and trauma-informed approaches where applicable.

Assist clients in reaching their goals to wellness by promoting connection to community and natural resources.

Accompany clients and their family members to meetings and appointments to support goal achievement and assist in gathering, understanding, and organizing key information.

Lead culturally grounded education and outreach efforts by delivering presentations and workshops on human trafficking awareness to strengthen early-intervention and community.

Create and maintain appropriate systems for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on human trafficking trends, including number of identified victims and survivors, types of exploitation, and demographic information.

Develop, monitor, and manage safety planning and crisis prevention while assessing risk.

Prepare monthly reports in a timely manner.

Support cultural teachings and the connections to Elders or Knowledge Keepers to promote cultural identity and healing.

Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, shelters, health and social service providers, and other partners to support coordinated responses and reduce service barriers.

Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.

Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.

Knowledge of the Canadian Justice System, Mental Health System, and Addiction Systems.

Strong knowledge of supports and resources available for Métis Albertans.

Commitment to trauma-informed care principles, cultural humility, and social justice advocacy.

Must be able to handle situations with tact, diplomacy, and possess the ability to be empathetic and non-judgmental when assisting Métis Albertans.

Ability to be firm and assertive when necessary.

Culturally sensitive, compassionate, and trustworthy.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to build collaborative, positive relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including clients, community members, senior leadership, and Otipemisiwak Métis Government employees.

Evidence of strong organizational and negotiating skills and the ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, while demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, and resilience in a fast-paced environment.

Proficient in Microsoft office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and google docs, Google sheets and Google Forms.

 

Qualifications

Post secondary degree/diploma in criminology, criminal justice, social work, addictions, gender studies or other applicable program of study.

Minimum two years of case management experience, crisis intervention, and outreach.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Minimum two years relevant experience in working with vulnerable Indigenous (specifically Métis) population that may have experienced challenges or who may have been targeted by Human Trafficking is an asset.

Experience working in the Justice, or Human Trafficking field is an asset.

Indigenous Awareness and Trauma-Informed Training is an asset.

Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices governing human trafficking, victim rights, and survivor services.

 

Other Requirements

Ability to work shift schedule of Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, as well as work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends based on the needs of citizens.

Must be willing to travel within Alberta and work irregular hours, on occasion, to meet project needs.

Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and an operational vehicle.

A vulnerable Sector Police Information Check and Child Intervention Record Check is required.
