Position Summary
The Safety and Environmental Compliance Specialist is responsible for leading workplace safety and environmental compliance across AQL operations, with a strong focus on California regulatory requirements.
This is a hands-on, field-facing role for a specialist who can quickly assess risk, identify compliance gaps, and implement practical solutions that reduce exposure to fines, penalties, and operational disruption. This role is expected to quickly identify and remediate compliance gaps, particularly in California, to reduce regulatory exposure and potential penalties. The role partners closely with Regional Managers, store leadership, HR, and Operations to ensure consistent execution of safety and environmental standards across all locations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead safety and environmental compliance efforts across AQL locations, with emphasis on California regulations and CUPA-related requirementsConduct field audits, inspections, and site assessments to identify safety hazards and environmental compliance risksEnsure compliance with OSHA standards, hazardous materials regulations, and applicable environmental lawsEvaluate hazardous materials handling, storage, disposal, and documentation practices at the store levelInvestigate workplace incidents and environmental concerns, focusing on root cause, corrective action, and preventionPartner with Regional Managers and store leadership to correct compliance gaps and reinforce accountabilitySupport preparation for regulatory inspections and assist in responding to agency inquiries or findingsDevelop and deliver practical training for managers on safety, hazardous materials handling, and compliance expectationsMonitor trends and provide recommendations to reduce risk, improve compliance, and strengthen field executionSupport development and rollout of safety and environmental policies, procedures, and SOPs
Qualifications
3–5 years of experience in safety, environmental compliance, EHS, or hazardous materials management in a multi-site or field-based environmentStrong working knowledge of OSHA standards and workplace safety practicesExperience with hazardous materials regulations, inspections, or environmental compliance programsAbility to conduct audits, interpret regulations, and implement corrective actions in operational settingsAbility to influence field leadership and drive compliance across multiple locations
Preferred Experience
Experience working with California environmental regulations, including Certified Unified Program Agency requirementsBackground in hazardous materials management, environmental health, industrial hygiene, or related fieldExperience supporting inspections, enforcement, or regulatory compliance in a business or government settingExperience in automotive, service, industrial, or similar operational environmentsMilitary leadership or safety-related experience is valued, particularly in roles involving operational risk management and compliance
Certifications (Preferred)
OSHA 30 strongly preferredHAZWOPER or similar environmental or safety certification preferredASP, CSP, or other recognized safety certifications are a plus

Work Environment

Compensation
$80,000 – $100,000 annually, depending on experienceEligible for bonus opportunities and standard company benefits
