Our firm has a well-established litigation practice in Yellowknife with a strong focus on child protection and family law matters. We act for clients in complex and often urgent proceedings before the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories and are committed to delivering high-quality, client-focused legal services in the North.
The Litigation Paralegal will work closely with lawyers in a busy child protection practice, providing hands-on litigation support from file intake through resolution. This role requires a high level of organization, strong drafting skills, and the ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism and compassion.
The regular working hours for this role are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and can be based out of Yellowknife, Calgary or Vancouver. This is a term contract position for 12- 18 months.
Standard Responsibilities
Assist lawyers with all stages of child protection litigation, including preparation for hearings, case conferences, trials, and appeals
Drafting orders, affidavits of service, and other court related correspondence and documentation;
Preparing disclosure for release to opposing counsel
Responding to general inquiries from Child Protection Workers and opposing counsel on matters;
Preparing for community dockets and assisting with managing service related issues;
Regularly communicating directly with Child Protection Workers and is their first point of contact on issues relating to court filings and service deadlines.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic client files
Track critical deadlines, limitation periods, and court dates using bring-forward systems
Enter time and assist with billing support
Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients, counsel, court staff, and child protection agencies
Qualifications
Paralegal diploma or certificate from a recognized institution
Minimum 2–3 years of litigation paralegal experience, preferably in family or child protection law
Strong knowledge of court procedures, document preparation, and filing requirements
Excellent organizational, drafting, and time-management skills
Experience working with Indigenous clients or northern communities is an asset
