Job Title:  LIFE GUARD

Department:  Parks and Recreation

Reports To:  Pool, Recreation, and Aquatic Center Managers/Supervisors

Directs Work Of:  NA

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Pay Level:  Seasonal 4

Effective Dates:  2015, 2016

Normal Schedule:  As assigned

 

Education/Experience:  Must possess a valid American Red Cross Life guarding Certificate and American Red Cross First Aid certificate. Must be certified in American Red Cross Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Pro-Rescuer. ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience lifeguarding. Requires knowledge of water rescue methods; life guarding and first-aid practices and techniques; and swimming pool operations to include: sanitation, maintenance, and safety. Must have the ability to courteously and firmly interact with pool patrons. Ability and skill in carrying out water rescues.

 

Position Summary
Ensures the safety of pool patrons and assists with aquatic programs and pool operation. Work is performed under the general supervision of an Aquatics Center Supervisor.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 Other related duties may be assigned.

 

Safeguard and regulate conduct of pool patrons. Enforce pool policies, rules, and regulations. Rescues patrons and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid. Executes the Emergency Action Plan as situation requires.

 

Test water quality in pool and maintains appropriate records. Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary up keep of the pool, pool area, and locker rooms. Participate in the preparation of daily records. Provide written reports on all accidents. Maintain proper updated safety requirements.

 

Attends in-service training and instructs certain skills to staff. Conduct patron swimming test to assess ability to swim independently and unattended. Provide customer service to patrons, including handling customer conflict and complaints, as necessary.

 

Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor. At all times while on duty, wears the approved guard uniform, a whistle, and a fanny pack containing PPEs.

 

May provide guidance to less experienced Lifeguards during shift. May assist Aquatics Center Supervisor in daily aquatic managerial duties. May maintain proper chemical balances in both pool and whirlpool as directed making adjustments to these balances as directed. May handle mechanical/pump room or chemical problems as necessary.

Qualifications

Language/Communication Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as detailed safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Can create/write routine reports and correspondence with minimal supervisory oversight; Can speak appropriately and effectively and respond appropriately to questions from groups of members, co-workers, general public or leadership/supervisors.

 

Math Skills: Ability to perform and understand basic math calculations including adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying whole and decimal numbers using a calculator.

While performing this work, the employee requires the ability to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time throughout the workday; must be able to swim and perform Life Guard duties/rescue; requires manual dexterity and vision sufficient to perform life guard duties and pool maintenance; and requires hearing and speech sufficient to understand and clearly communicate in conversations, in person and in loud disruptive environments.  The employee must have adequate vision including depth perception and peripheral vision to clearly view occupants’ activity in swimming pool and surrounding pool area.  The employee must occasionally l ift/move up to 10 pounds.

Working conditions require the employee to work outside, in and around a public pool/aquatic center.  Employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather extremes; loud noises from pool guests, toxic chemicals used in maintaining public pool and risk of drowning.
