The role?
An Instrument Technician – Level 3 (often aligned with NVQ/Apprenticeship Level 3 in industrial instrumentation) is typically a competent, hands-on technician who can work with limited supervision. The expected skill set spans technical, safety, and professional area
Main Responsibilities:
• Principles of measurement: pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical instruments
• Accuracy, repeatability, hysteresis, range, and calibration concepts
• Calibration & testing
• Calibrating transmitters, switches, and control valves
• Use of test equipment (multimeters, loop calibrators, pressure pumps)
• As-found / as-left documentation
• Fault finding & maintenance
• Diagnosing instrument faults (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic)
• Preventive and corrective maintenance
• Replacing and setting up field instruments
Requirements:
Essential Skills:
• Electrical knowledge
• Reading electrical schematics and loop diagrams
• Working with 4–20 mA loops, 24 VDC systems, basic AC
• Earthing/grounding and intrinsic safety basics
• Control systems
• Understanding PLC/DCS input/output signals
• Basic control loops (PID awareness, not tuning expert)
• Instrument interfaces with control systems
• Actuators & valves
• Control valve types and positioners
• Basic valve stroking and setup
• Installation & Commissioning
• Instrument installation to drawings and specs
• Tubing and impulse line installation
• Loop checking and commissioning support
• Basic panel wiring and termination
• Safe systems of work (PTW, LOTO, risk assessments)
• Working in hazardous areas (ATEX/IECEx awareness)
• Understanding site procedures and industry standards
• Environmental and quality compliance
Preferred Qualifications:
• Using maintenance management systems (CMMS)
• Basic computer literacy for reports and manuals
• Understanding smart instruments and digital protocols (HART awareness is common)
