The Faculty of Law

Te Wāhanga Ture | The Auckland Law School  is ranked in 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject as the best place to study law in New Zealand based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact; and again in the top 100 Law Schools internationally (QS 59=).  It is the largest law school in New Zealand and has an international reputation for academic excellence.

The Law School currently comprises over 50 full-time academic staff, including 20 professors, with expertise across a broad range of subject areas.  It has high entry standards for its LLB and LLB (Honours) degrees and has an outstanding postgraduate programme.

The Law School enjoys excellent international links and a strong relationship nationally with the legal profession, policymakers, and the judiciary.  It is supported by the staff and resources of the Davis Law Library, New Zealand’s leading legal research library.  Leading scholars from top overseas universities often visit the Law School and teach courses for the LLM programme.

The Law School hosts several legal centres including:

• The Aotearoa New Zealand Centre for Indigenous Peoples and the Law;
• The  New Zealand Centre for Legal and Political Theory;
• The  New Zealand Centre for Environmental Law;

The Law School also enjoys a close relationship with the Legal Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation of legal practitioners and academics that promotes legal research and law reform. The New Zealand Law Review, one of New Zealand’s leading law journals, is published by the Legal Research Foundation and edited by members of the Law School.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We invite applications for a Lecturer position within Te Wāhanga Ture | The Auckland Law School. Applications are welcome from all areas of law.

Lecturers in the Law School are expected to deliver high‑quality, research‑informed teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including at least one core law course.  They are also expected to maintain an active research programme, produce high‑quality scholarly work, supervise research students, and contribute to service and leadership activities that support the Law School and the wider University.

This is a full time, 40 hours per week, permanent employment contract. The salary range for this role is Lecturer Step 1 NZ$99,788 – Lecturer Step 7 NZ$119,204 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are seeking an energetic, can‑do academic who will contribute to the Law School through high‑quality research, teaching, supervision, and engagement.  Strong communication skills, a collaborative ethos, and a collegial approach are essential.

You will bring:

• An LLB or equivalent and postgraduate qualifications in Law (a PhD in Law or a related discipline is highly desirable);
• Demonstrated potential to produce high‑quality legal research and publications; and
• Ability to teach effectively across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including those in core curriculum areas, is desirable.
