JOB SUMMARY

The Cultural Support Worker/Inuvialuktun Language Instructor plays a key role in supporting cultural and language development for young children in the Aboriginal Head Start program. This position is responsible for planning and leading daily activities that promote Inuvialuktun language and Inuvialuit cultural knowledge. In addition to delivering programming, the role includes assisting with child care and helping with the day-to-day operations of the Head Start facility.

The position reports to the Program Coordinator and contributes to creating a safe, engaging, and culturally rich learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan and lead daily activities that teach Inuvialuktun language and Inuvialuit culture to young children.

Create a safe and welcoming learning environment that supports cultural identity and early childhood development.

Work closely with the Program Coordinator to deliver culturally relevant programming that meets the goals of the Aboriginal Head Start program.

Support children’s care needs, including helping with meals, hygiene, and supervision during play and learning times.

Help with the daily operations of the Head Start facility, including setting up learning spaces and keeping materials organized.

Build strong relationships with children, families, and staff to encourage participation and cultural pride.

Use traditional knowledge and language to guide children’s learning and connect them to their community roots.

Assist with special events and celebrations that highlight Inuvialuit traditions and seasonal activities.

Keep records and reports as needed to support program planning and child development tracking

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be/have:

Aboriginal Language Instructors/Early Childhood Development Certificate or equivalent education considered an asset.

Knowledge of the Inuvialuit language and culture.

Fluency in Inuvialuktun.

A minimum of 2 years of experience, preferably in early childhood.

Must have up to date immunizations in accordance with the NWT Immunization Schedule, an acceptable Tuberculosis Screening test and provide proof of this prior to start date.

Must provide a satisfactory RCMP criminal records check, including a vulnerable sector search, prior to hire.

WHAT WE OFFER

Vacation benefits:  We provide eligible employees with vacation pay at a rate of 4% on each bi-weekly pay.

Northern Living Allowance (NLA): We provide eligible employees with $2.77 per hour for NLA. This allowance will be paid on a bi-weekly basis for all hours worked in the pay period up to 75 hours bi-weekly.
