THE OPPORTUNITY
Ambipar is currently seeking a Landfill Equipment Operator based out of Calgary, Red Deer, Youngstown, or Drumheller.
RESPONSIBILITIES AT HAND / WHAT YOUR DAYS WILL CONSIST OF
Operational Leadership
Supervise daily tipping face operations, including waste acceptance, traffic flow, safety procedures, and staffing assignments.
Serve as the on-site point of contact for all operational concerns, escalating issues to upper management as needed.
Monitor incoming loads for compliance with site acceptance criteria and diversion opportunities.
Ensure proper placement, compaction, and cover of waste to maintain site integrity and maximize air space capacity.
Heavy Equipment Operation
Operate heavy machinery (e.g., loader, landfill compactor) to manage, sort, and cover materials.
Perform equipment walkarounds, inspections, and coordinate repairs or servicing with maintenance teams.
Maintain high standards of safety, efficiency, and care in all equipment-related tasks.
Compliance & Safety
Enforce site rules, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements for all contractors, and customers.
Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and on-the-spot coaching to maintain a zero-incident culture.
Monitor environmental controls (dust, litter, erosion, leachate, noise) and maintain inspection records.
Waste Screening & Diversion Oversight
Support landfill staff in identifying prohibited, hazardous, or divertible materials.
Optimize diversion strategies for streams like metal, wood, drywall, organics, and recyclables.
Track volumes and contamination data; recommend improvements to enhance diversion performance.
Engage with customers and haulers to improve compliance and separation at the source.
Administrative Support
Maintain daily logs, inspection checklists, equipment usage records, and basic site metrics.
Complete incident reporting
Support facility audits, reporting, and compliance documentation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; additional certifications in waste management, heavy equipment, or supervisory training preferred.
2+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in landfill or construction environments.
Must maintain or be working towards a valid Landfill Operator Certificate of Qualification, administered by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)
Knowledge and experience of solid waste handling, recycling, and environmental regulations.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Strong communication and leadership skills; confident managing both staff and the public.
Able to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment with changing priorities.
Proficient with basic computer systems, digital logs, and equipment maintenance tracking.
Able to wear PPE at all times (hi-vis, steel-toe boots, gloves, etc.).
