The Role
BGC is seeking a Junior to Intermediate Laboratory Technician with a passion to expand their knowledge of geotechnical testing for our advanced soil and rock testing facility in Fredericton, New Brunswick (BGC Engineering | Fredericton, NB (matterport.com)).
BGC’s laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility which specializes in strength, compressibility and permeability testing of soil, and strength testing of rock. Our testing equipment includes cyclic dynamic simple shear, servo-controlled fully automated triaxial, and automated oedometer systems. The technician will support engineers with advanced rock and soil laboratory testing and learn foundational soil mechanics & rock mechanics.
Responsibilities
Organize and maintain sample inventory
Maintain and operate testing equipment
Prepare rock and soil samples for testing
Conduct advanced laboratory tests on rock and soil
Prepare laboratory test reports
Follow lab procedures for safety and quality
Train and mentor laboratory staff and laboratory visitors
Required Education, Experience & Competencies
Technical diploma in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering
0-10 years of relevant industry experience
Technical competence and experience with machine operation and repair
Experience utilizing basic software for machine operation and data entry
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience with materials testing is considered an asset
Experience with use of power tools, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical circuits is considered an asset
Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing
To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position. The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.
Driver’s License
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.
Travel and Vaccination

Compensation
The estimated base salary range for this position is $60,000-$80,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a discretionary bonus plan, training allowance, and comprehensive medical and dental plan.
