Junior Software Engineer – Data Analysis & Automation (TE-MPE-PE-2026-93-GRAE)

The operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) relies on thousands of superconducting magnets, which are powered in more than 1500 circuits. Ensuring the safe functionality of the magnet circuit protection and interlock systems is a critical aspect of the LHC hardware commissioning.

As part of the Signal Monitoring (SigMon) project, you will design and develop Python-based software tools to automate large-scale data analysis. A strong focus is placed on modern software engineering practices, including continuous integration and testing within GitLab to ensure robust, maintainable and high-quality code. The role involves processing, analysing and visualising large datasets generated during hardware commissioning campaigns.

Your responsibilities:

• Contribute to the development of automated data analysis tools using Python.
• Support the improvement and modernisation of software used for superconducting circuit and magnet protection analysis.
• Assist in building and maintaining web-based tools for storing and visualising analysis results.
• Participate in implementing automated testing and continuous integration workflows.
• Collaborate with team members through code reviews and shared development practices.
• Work closely with experts from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds.

Your profile:

• Experience with Python development.
• Experience with GitLab (including version control and CI/CD workflows).
• Experience with data analysis and/or machine learning.
• Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML and Node.js.

Skills:

• Proficiency in Python.
• Proficiency in GitLab.
• Good knowledge of Jupyter notebooks.
• Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML and Node.js.
• Experience in machine learning is considered a plus, but not mandatory.
• Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computing (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
