Job Description

The High-Intensity ECN3 project is designing a new facility for the SHiP experiment at CERN's North Area. We are seeking a Graduate Engineer to work on the engineering design and production of several beam intercepting devices required along the beamline and assist the developments of the high-power Target.

The position includes thermo-mechanical and CFD studies on beam stoppers, collimators and the Target. It involves exploring technologies, optimising designs, dimensioning components and services, conducting characterisation studies.

You will support the procurement and construction of the devices in collaboration with other groups and external partners, and get involved in hands-on activities, develop scripts to support CAE and operation activities of the section and explore tools, methods and processes related with AI.

Your responsibilities:

• Carryout engineering studies related with beam-intercepting devices of the ECN3 HI project.
• Collaborate closely with designers, physicists, and engineers to align engineering specifications with physics requirements.
• Present regular status updates at project meetings, gather feedback, and engage in technical discussions.
• Perform FEA thermo-mechanical studies and conduct CFD and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analyses.
• Propose conceptual designs and improvements for various components.
• Conduct literature research to identify relevant technologies and design solutions.
• Assist in the design, procurement and production of the equipment and components.
• Write procurement documents and define material and manufacturing specifications in collaboration with technical groups.
• Carry out hands-on work in support of the technicians during production and assembly phases.
• Develop scripts, tools and guidelines for the section.
• Explore, implement and promote AI-related initiatives.

Your profile:

• Strong technical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, with expertise in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and material science.
• Experience in relevant FEA software tools, such as Ansys (or equivalent).

Skills:

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration.
• Proactive problem-solving mindset with the ability to defend ideas using technical arguments.
• Autonomy in handling specific technical tasks within a team context.
• Strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
• Hands-on approach and readiness to support technical activities.
• Interest in code development, ML and AI.
• Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Applied physics (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Job closing date: 30.03.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite
