JR. Polymer Processing Engineer

TECHNICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Senior Polymer Process Engineer, assists in the development, implementation, and optimization of polymer processing methods, including continuous casting and related manufacturing processes

Supports the scale-up of polymer formulations and processes from laboratory and pilot scale to manufacturing scale, assisting with technology transfer from NPD to Production

Assists in the execution of process trials, experiments, and studies to evaluate process capability, stability, and product performance

Participates in the verification and validation of new and modified processes through the execution of test plans and procedures

Records numerical and graphical data; performs basic analysis and calculations; prepares draft test summaries and contributes to formal reports

Performs characterization and materials testing and assists in interpreting results under the guidance of senior staff

Supports polymer flow and process simulations using tools such as ANSYS Workbench / PolyFlow to aid process understanding and design decisions

Assists in troubleshooting, processing and equipment-related issues, identifying potential root causes and supporting corrective actions under the guidance of senior staff

Participates in the construction, set-up, operation, and maintenance of test equipment and pilot-scale processing equipment as required

Assists with the preparation of work instructions, standard operating procedures, and technical documentation for new or modified processes

Develop CAD models, layouts, or design concepts to support equipment modification, tooling, or procurement activities

Collaborates professionally with Production, Quality, Engineering, Purchasing, and other departments to support NPD objectives and process implementation

Participates in other project-related tasks as assigned by the Manager, New Product Development, or designated Project Leads

Maintains TBI proprietary information on products and manufacturing processes in strict confidence

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 Sc. Degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline

Minimum of 4 years of University Education in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, graduating with a Sc. Degree

Minimum of 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in product development, materials engineering, polymer processing, or laboratory-based engineering roles

Proficiency in SolidWorks is preferred to streamline our 3D design to the manufacturing workflow.

Experience with ANSYS Workbench/PolyFlow for simulation workflows is highly desirable

Knowledge and working experience in polymer processing or polymer chemistry would be an asset

Hands-on experience in an experimental lab setting

Thordon Product knowledge is an asset

Knowledge and exposure to Project Management basics is preferable

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Working knowledge of chemical engineering, polymer science, mechanical engineering or material engineering at a professional entry level

Foundational understanding of thermoplastic materials

Exposure to CAD-based design and engineering drawings, preferably SolidWorks

Experience or academic exposure to ANSYS Workbench / PolyFlow or similar simulation tools is an asset

Familiarity with basic polymer characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, DMA, TGA) is considered an asset

Hands-on aptitude with mechanical equipment and tools used in laboratory, pilot, or manufacturing environments

Ability to read, interpret, and understand basic technical drawings and process documentation

Developing technical writing skills for preparing procedures, reports, and technical summaries

Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, Outlook, and Internet-based tools

Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a project-based environment

Self-motivated, with a willingness to learn and develop technical and professional skills

Team-oriented, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving

Attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures and instructions

Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal

Professional attitude when interacting with colleagues across departments

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

The employee is subject to the work conditions of a Chemical and/or a Mechanical Test laboratory and a mechanical manufacturing environment for most of the time, where they may occasionally be exposed to chemicals and solvents, and to noise hazards at low to intermediate levels. For the remainder of the time, the work will be at a computer workstation in an office environment, performing technical writing or other project tasks. 

National or international travel may be required 5% of the time to attend trade shows, technical conferences, or meet with distributors and customers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and talk or hear; using shop tools and lifting medium to heavy-weight objects by hand or using lifting/handling equipment may be required.
