SUMMARY OF DUTIES

 

Reports to District Supervisor(s) and/or Lead Hand(s) within the Transportation Division - Roadway Maintenance Section.  Operates various pieces of heavy equipment and completes physical labouring duties as assigned related to roadside drainage, hard surface and loose top maintenance programs.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

 

Operates with demonstrated substantial knowledge and maintains various pieces of heavy equipment such as but not limited to Gradall, Backhoe, excavation equipment, Road Motor Graders, large asphalt Rollers (>5ton), Loaders, quick connect bucket/fork attachments competently relating to roadside drainage, hard surface and loose top maintenance programs.

 

Performs labouring and driving duties as assigned on a daily basis such as, but not limited to; climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking and handling of materials required for all maintenance programs.

 

Competently operates hand tools and power tools.  Such tools would include, but not limited to: shovels, picks, various grass cutting/trimming equipment, compressor, jackhammer, pumps, hot box components concrete/chain/chop saw, small power tools, compactors, drills, leaf blowers.  

 

Performs duties in various locations.  Duties vary dependant on location, rural or urban setting.  This may include duties such as but not limited to filling potholes, shovelling, manual labour, traffic control (flagging), operation of various power tools, vehicles, grass cutting equipment, driving specialized equipment, concrete repairs, ground restoration duties, litter/bulk pick up, working around water. Must be able to work in adverse road and weather conditions.

 

Responsibility to complete accurate daily inspection and documentation of all relevant pieces of heavy equipment in accordance with any and all related fleet policies and procedures. Responsible for completing documentation such as but not limited to: daily activity logs, inspection sheets (pre-trip) and various reports are required.

 

Performs inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.

 

Demonstrated ability to interpret excavation locates. Ability to use and understand blueprints, transit/level for grades.

 

Interacts with the general public, representatives of external agencies, supervisors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner.

 

Works and competent knowledge in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.

 

Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the Roads section.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Demonstrated substantial experience and ability to operate heavy equipment Gradall, Backhoe, Road Motor Grader, asphalt Roller (>5ton), excavating equipment, Loaders, quick connect bucket/fork attachments in accordance with the designs and standards of various road maintenance programs normally acquired by a combination of education and relevant work experience. OSSD or equivalent would be considered an asset.

Demonstrated experience and training with heavy equipment, Gradall, Backhoe, Road Motor Grader, asphalt Rollers (>5ton), excavation equipment, Loaders, quick connect bucket/fork attachments, dump trucks, and other vehicles.

Demonstrated knowledge to interpret excavation locates. Knowledge and experience reading blueprints and utilizing transit/level tools, hand tools, and the ability to determine direction of flow, cross fall, and slope of grade.

Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions and take direction. Ability to accurately complete various logs, documents, inspection forms and other administrative information, Able to use fractions and decimal arithmetic and simple formulas, diagrams and drawings.

Knowledge of relevant legislation such as but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including W.H.M.I.S. legislation, Book 7 traffic control, Minimum Maintenance Standards, 70 Hours Regulation, and HTA.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 23 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs.

Must have solid interpersonal skills required to assist and respond with all scenarios and situations in regards to the general public, co-workers, supervisors and any other stakeholders etc.

Must possess a Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence valid in the Province of Ontario and a Driver’s abstract clear of any demerit points and pending infractions and/or record found to be satisfactory to the City of Hamilton. A-Z licence will be considered an asset.

Requirement to work beyond 8 hrs, work shift, overtime, callouts, weekends, nights etc. when needed. Must be able to work with crew as well as independently with minimal supervision and in adverse road and weather conditions.

Working knowledge and computer skills utilizing Web search engines, GPS tools and windows functions an asset.

Demonstrated experience operating a CVOR vehicle for more than 3 years an asset.

 

THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "DZ" DRIVER'S LICENCE, CLEAR OF ANY DEMERIT POINTS OR INFRACTIONS OR IMPENDING DEMERIT/INFRACTIONS AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.

40 per week

 

NOTE 1:

Candidates being considered for this position must satisfactorily pass equipment operating evaluation, written technical assessment and interview.

NOTE 2:

This position will transfer seasonally and will assume the responsibilities of the winter operations job classification.  These duties include but are not limited to: operate and maintain various pieces of equipment/vehicles such as industrial size snow blower, single and tandem axle sander/plow truck, tractors, front end loaders, relating to the winter control program.  Performs pre-trip inspections and is responsible for related documentation as per MTO and City of Hamilton policies and procedures such as 70 hours service regulations.  Remove snow from sidewalks, pathways, and roadway by shovelling, ploughing, blowing, sanding or salting.  Perform duties in various locations of the operations division. Duties vary dependent on locations, rural, urban setting and weather.
