Summary
The Backend Team Manager leads the Backend Project Technicians (Level 1 and Level 2) and is responsible for ensuring backend project work is delivered on time, within scope, and with high technical quality. This role combines people, leadership, resource planning, quality assurance, and cross-functional coordination to support successful project delivery. The Backend Team Manager plays a critical role in maintaining team performance, preventing resource bottlenecks, enforcing standards, and identifying project risks early to keep implementations on track.
Key Responsibilities
Resource Planning & Task Alignment
Review project scopes and align backend resources based on technical complexity and technician skill sets
Ensure proper backend technician coverage across all project phases within ConnectWise Manage workplans
Monitor active project workloads to prevent overcommitment or resource gaps
Confirm backend resources are scheduled with appropriate lead time for both remote and onsite work
Team Leadership & Development
Supervise and support Backend Project Technicians (L1–L2)
Approve PTO requests in alignment with project demands and team capacity
Conduct regular 1:1 meetings focused on performance, challenges, engagement, and growth
Lead quarterly performance and development discussions, including career pathing and skills progression
Ensure consistent adherence to backend deployment SOPs and technical standards
Review and approve ConnectWise Manage timesheets for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with documented work
Project Execution & Time Management
Monitor backend task progress in ConnectWise Manage to ensure work is completed on schedule and within budgeted hours
Identify tasks approaching or exceeding allocated time and partner with Project Managers to determine root cause and corrective action
Enforce accountability for timely, accurate, and complete time entry across all backend project work
Ensure backend deliverables meet documentation and configuration standards to support clean handoffs to Service teams
Confirm assigned technicians actively monitor project communication channels (including Teams chats), log issues appropriately, and escalate when required
Technical Quality Assurance
Audit project documentation including network diagrams, system configurations, SharePoint structures, and migration records for accuracy and completeness
Review backend communications and project notes to ensure critical issues are tracked and resolved
Partner with technicians on escalations, complex implementations, and final technical validation—particularly for migrations and infrastructure deployments
Promote consistent technical standards and repeatable deployment practices across the team
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as the primary liaison between Backend Technicians and Project Managers to align scope, expectations, and timelines
Escalate project risks, resourcing concerns, or recurring technical challenges to the Director of Projects or Engineering leadership
Participate in project kickoffs and closeout calls to maintain continuity and advocate for backend requirements
Required Qualifications
Experience: 3–5+ years in an MSP or similar IT services environment, with progressive technical responsibility
Technical Expertise:
Windows operating systems
Microsoft 365 / Office 365
Active Directory and Intune
Network infrastructure (SonicWall, UniFi, switching, routing, wireless)
Systems & Tools: Experience with RMM platforms (e.g., ConnectWise RMM) and PSA/ticketing systems (e.g., ConnectWise Manage, ServiceNow, Zendesk)
Networking Knowledge: Strong understanding of IP networking, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, VLANs, and Wi-Fi
Security Fundamentals: Familiarity with firewalls, endpoint protection, and cybersecurity best practices
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud
Familiarity with scripting or automation (PowerShell, Bash, or similar)
Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., NinjaOne, Auvik)
Proficiency with documentation platforms such as IT Glue or SharePoint
Relevant industry certifications (CompTIA, Microsoft, or similar)
