Investigator – Office of the Ombudsman (Contract) 

 

Location: 11738 Kingsway NW, Edmonton, AB. Work arrangement will be hybrid.

Position Status: Part Time (Up to 40 hrs per week), one month contract with possibility of extension 

 

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking to hire an Investigator on contract to support the Office of the Ombudsman on a short-term basis, with possibility of extension. This position will be responsible for assisting the Ombudsman on an as needed basis with ongoing investigations. The Investigator must possess strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to analyze complex situations with sound judgement. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Prepare and maintain investigative reports. 

Interpret complaints and identify next steps in compliance with the Ombudsman Act. 

Develop investigative plans to conduct unbiased, fact-based investigations and culturally sensitive interviews by identifying key issues, reviewing evidence sources, and coordinating a list of involved persons to be interviewed. 

Coordinate with legal counsel and seek advice on complaints and other matters requiring legal guidance in relation to investigations, as required. 

Maintain accurate and up to date records and documentation. Ensure the safeguarding of all confidential files. 

Work cooperatively with the Ombudsman to support the achievement of tasks and goals. 

Present a positive and professional image of the Office of the Ombudsman when interacting with Citizens and stakeholders. 

Maintain a high level of cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality in all interactions and when handling sensitive documents. 

Other duties as required or assigned. 

 

Skills and Competencies 

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess complex information, analyze evidence, identify patterns, and draw logical conclusions to support investigative findings. 

Strong ability to exercise sound judgement and act in an impartial manner to ensure investigations are conducted fairly, objectively, and without bias. 

Strong computer skills with the ability to adapt to new technology and software. 

Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 

Ability to produce professional documents, reports, and presentations. 

Ability to effectively maintain filing systems, databases and tracking processes. 

Superior written and verbal communication skills, including strong report writing skills, professional email etiquette, and the ability to communicate in stressful situations. 

Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives. 

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships. 

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. 

Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

Strong sense of ethics and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions. 

Political and cultural sensitivity. 

Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset. 

 

Qualifications 

Post-secondary education in Public Administration, Business Administration, Law, Human Resources, or related field (equivalent experiences will be considered). 

Minimum two (2) years of experience in an investigative role or similar role, preferably within a government, non-profit, or Indigenous organization. 

Minimum two years of customer service experience required. 

Experience working in public administration, legal field, with senior leadership, or within Indigenous organizations is an asset. 

 

Other Requirements 

Position is based in Edmonton. Must be able to work in Edmonton as required. 

Ability to work a flexible schedule on an as needed basis, including evenings and weekends with notice. 

Ability to travel throughout the province of Alberta, as required. 

Acceptable attainment of a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check. 

Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
