INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SPECIALIST - VENTURE DEVELOPMENT
INVEST OTTAWA – BAYVIEW YARDS
The Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist supports the growth of startups and scale-ups through Invest Ottawa’s IP Services and Programs. Reporting to the IP Programs Manager, this role is the first point of contact for ElevateIP and IP Assist participants. The specialist guides companies through their IP journey, manages inquiries, and ensures seamless delivery of IP services. Success is measured by participant satisfaction, program compliance, and effective support to clients and stakeholders.
Corporate Pay Band B: $49,600-$74,400
Hiring Salary Range: $49,600 - $63,000
Reason for opening: Backfilling a position
Work Model: 10 days per month required in-office at Bayview Yards and Area X.O
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Serve as a first point of contact for IP programs, responding to client inquiries in a timely and professional manner
Support clients through onboarding, applications, calls, and referrals
Communicate clearly with participants, colleagues, and external partners, ensuring accurate and consistent information sharing
Support the IP Programs Manager in the delivery of ElevateIP and IP Assist initiatives
Coordinate with IP Advisors and external service providers to facilitate client support
Organize workshops, seminars, and awareness-building sessions, including managing logistics, scheduling, and communications
Collaborate cross-functionally with teams including Finance, Marketing, and Venture Development
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and ecosystem partners (e.g., IPON, IAC, external providers)
Provide timely, client-focused support across the IP journey and facilitate referrals to advisors and partners
Review funding applications and prepare preliminary summaries for internal review
Act as committee secretary, maintaining accurate records and documentation of decisions
Manage dashboards and track key performance indicators using tools such as Dynamics, Excel, and Power BI
Prepare reports and share insights on program performance with stakeholders
Adapt to diverse client needs and provide flexible, solution-oriented support
Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance program delivery and effectiveness
WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED/GAINED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER :
Post-secondary education in business, law, or a related field
Experience supporting programs or client services in a professional environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics, Excel, and Power BI
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with a high level of attention to detail
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
Familiarity with intellectual property concepts and/or Canadian IP programs is considered an asset
Primarily office-based at Bayview Yards Innovation Centre, with occasional evening or weekend work for events
Operates in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring adaptability and the ability to manage multiple priorities
Frequent multitasking across client support, program logistics, and reporting
High level of concentration required for data management and compliance checks
Minimal physical effort; standard office and virtual work conditions
Occasional travel may be required
