Appointment Type

Temporary-Exempt (TEX). This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment shall not exceed 36 months.

The Department provides assistance and support to homeless and at-risk youth, adults and families to prevent imminent episodes of homelessness and end homelessness for people in San Francisco. Services include outreach, homelessness prevention, emergency shelter, drop-in centers, transitional housing, supportive housing, short-term rental subsidies, and support services to help people exit homelessness. What We Do

San Francisco is a pioneer in homeless services and a leader in providing supportive housing as a permanent exit from homelessness. The Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), founded in 2016, is a national leader in the movement to end homelessness by developing a coordinated, equity-driven, client-focused system of compassionate services while piloting innovative models, and implementing best practice solutions with measurable results. 

HSH’s Homelessness Response System (HRS) funds, oversees and implements a system of care that shelters, houses, and serves approximately 15,000 people daily. Major programs include: street outreach and service connection through the Homeless Outreach Team (SFHOT); 3,600 +bed shelter system for transitional age youth, adults and families including shelters for members of the LGBTQ community; rapid rehousing rental subsidies for families, adults, older adults, and transitional aged youth; the Problem Solving and flexible financial assistance programs; and robust supportive housing programs with over 14,500 units which provide housing and services to formerly homeless transitional age youth, individuals, and families.

Under general supervision, the 7524 Institution Utility Worker provides support to the 7334 Stationary Engineer and performs a variety of manual and general labor tasks in connection with general building and grounds maintenance, and performs other related duties as required.

Working Conditions: Nature of work involves physical effort in the repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment; the ability to lift heavy objects; exposure to working conditions where minor abrasions, bruises, and burns may occur; occasional uncomfortable work inside closed and dirty spaces; exposure to potential uncomfortable weather conditions and traffic conditions; and requires physical stamina to stand, stoop, bend and climb ladders while working in confined spaces, entryways and tight crawl spaces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

• Performs general building maintenance under close supervision
• Performs grounds, maintenance, and minor repair work
• Unclogs toilets, kitchen and bathroom drains
• Replaces and repairs door and window hardware
• Changes HVAC filters
• Performs general labor work as assigned by the 7334 Stationary Engineer including loading, uploading, moving materials, and running errands for projects
• Replaces light bulbs/lamps and cleans fixtures; changes ballasts
• Responds quickly to emergency situations and concerns from HSH providers
• Patches and paints walls as needed
• Assembles and disassembles furniture
• Sets up events 
• Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency, and company directives as related to building operations and practices safe work habits
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
• Shift: Monday-Friday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.    One year of experience in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; OR

2.    Six months experience in Class 7524 Institutional Utility Worker; AND

3.    Possession of a valid Class C driver license (attach a copy to the application).
