ICT Systems Engineer

We are currently seeking for an ICT System Engineer based in our Port Macquarie Shipyard on the beautiful Hastings River in NSW.

As the ICT Systems Engineer you will provide advanced technical support, systems administration, and operational maintenance across Birdon’s ICT infrastructure. This role ensures the reliability, performance, and security of the organisation’s hybrid environment (on-premises and cloud) and contributes to the continual improvement of ICT operations and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities but not limited:

Provide advanced technical support, troubleshooting, and systems administration for on-premises and cloud based infrastructure (Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows Server) Maintain, configure, and monitor core ICT infrastructure - including servers, storage, networking, identity management, and virtualisation environments (Hyper-V / Azure). Implement and manage system updates, patching, and configuration changes in accordance with ICT policies and security requirements.
Ensure availability, reliability, and performance of key infrastructure and cloud services through proactive monitoring, capacity management, and issue remediation.
Support the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of Birdon’s digital systems, ensuring scalability and alignment with the ICT roadmap.
Administer Microsoft 365 services, including Azure AD, on-prem Active Directory, Exchange Online, Intune, Sharepoint and other enterprise systems.
Maintain and improve backup disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities across both on prem and cloud environments.
Participate in the investigation and remediation of cybersecurity incidents and assist with vulnerability management and compliance with Defence-related ICT standards.
Create and maintain accurate technical documentation, knowledge base articles, and standard operating procedures.
Provide Level 2 and limited Level 1 support for escalations, including user account provisioning, endpoint configuration, and troubleshooting common issues.
Collaborate with other ICT staff and vendors to resolve complex technical problems and implement infrastructure enhancements.
Proactively promote safety, quality, and professionalism in all work practices.

Essential

Diploma or degree in Information Technology (or equivalent experience).
5+ years’ experience in systems administration, infrastructure operations, or similar technical roles in an enterprise environment.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, and Active Directory environments.
Experience managing virtualisation platforms (Hyper-V, VMWare) and enterprise networking fundamentals (LAN, WAN, VPN, firewalls).
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement long-term solutions.
Excellent communication and customer service skills with a proactive and professional approach

Desirable

Industry certification in Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, or ITIL Foundations.
Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or similar).
Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) or DevOps practices.
Exposure to Defence or government ICT compliance frameworks (e.g. DISP, PSPF, ISM).
