Justice North is a nonprofit civil legal aid organization providing free legal services to low-income individuals across northern Minnesota. Formed through the merger of Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota and Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, Justice North serves clients in both urban and rural communities with a commitment to equity, dignity, and access to justice. We provide a full range of poverty law services and partner closely with community organizations, courts, and service providers to help clients achieve safety, stability, and long-term solutions to legal problems.
Position Summary
Justice North is seeking a Housing Attorney to provide direct legal services to individuals and families experiencing housing instability. This role focuses on landlord/tenant matters, including evictions, housing conditions, utilities, and related issues.
The Housing Attorney represents clients in court and administrative proceedings, including virtual housing calendars, and plays a key role in expanding Justice North’s housing clinic model across the region. This position also involves outreach, legal education, and collaboration with courts and community partners to improve access to housing-related legal services.
This is a primarily remote position, with occasional in-person responsibilities for court appearances, clinics, outreach, or team collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a housing-focused caseload, providing high-quality, client-centered legal representation
Represent clients in court, administrative hearings, and other proceedings
Provide advice, brief services, and full representation in a range of housing matters
Participate in case acceptance, screening, and prioritization processes
Conduct legal research and apply findings to support effective advocacy
Collaborate with support staff, including delegating tasks appropriately
Provide legal services through virtual and in-person housing court calendars
Develop and conduct community legal education and outreach
Participate in and help coordinate legal clinics and intake opportunities
Assist in developing and distributing client-facing educational materials
Support training efforts for pro bono and Judicare panel attorneys, as needed
Build and maintain relationships with courts and community partners
Maintain compliance with organizational policies, funder requirements (including LSC), and timekeeping expectations
Participate in special projects and organizational initiatives as assigned
Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school
Licensed to practice law in Minnesota, or eligible for admission by motion/reciprocity, or willing to sit for the next bar exam
Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and communities
Experience in housing law or legal services preferred
Strong oral and written advocacy skills
Ability to identify and address multiple legal issues impacting clients (“holistic advocacy”)
Strong time management and organizational skills
Sound professional judgment and problem-solving ability
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Proficiency with technology and case management systems
Valid driver’s license, insurability, and access to reliable transportation
Working Conditions
This position is hybrid/remote with occasional in-person office days for outreach, trainings, and events.
Compensation and Benefits
Justice North offers a competitive salary based on experience, with a range of $80,000–$110,000, depending on experience, and an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental, life, and disability insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan; exceptionally generous paid time off; and paid federal holidays.
