A night auditor is responsible for closing the day’s financial transactions and preparing the hotel for the next day while also assisting guests overnight.
Key Duties
Front desk operations
Check guests in and out during the night
Handle late arrivals and early departures
Respond to guest requests, complaints, or emergencies
Financial auditing
Reconcile daily transactions (room charges, payments, POS systems)
Balance cash, credit card, and EFT transactions
Generate daily financial reports for management
Verify accuracy of billing and correct discrepancies
Administrative tasks
Prepare reports for departments (housekeeping, management)
Update reservation systems
Ensure proper record-keeping
Security and safety
Monitor the premises overnight
Handle emergencies or disturbances
Ensure guest safety and enforce hotel policies
Skills Required
Technical Skills
Basic accounting/bookkeeping knowledge
Familiarity with hotel management systems (e.g., Opera, Protel)
Computer literacy (especially spreadsheets and POS systems)
Numerical accuracy and attention to detail
Soft Skills
Strong communication and customer service skills
Problem-solving ability (especially working alone at night)
Time management and ability to multitask
Trustworthiness and integrity (handling money and sensitive data)
Ability to stay alert and focused during night shifts
Qualifications (South Africa)
Minimum Requirements
Matric (Grade 12) – essential
Basic computer literacy
Preferred Qualifications
Diploma or certificate in:
Hospitality Management
Tourism
Accounting or Bookkeeping
Experience
2–3 years in:
Front desk/reception
Hotel operations
Cash handling or administrative roles
Additional Requirements
Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, and public holidays
Ability to work independently (often the only staff member on duty)
Basic knowledge of South African hospitality standards and customer expectations
