Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Programs, the Horticultural Manager oversees plant cultivation, landscape maintenance, and team leadership. Managing daily operations, staff, volunteers, budgets, ensuring healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable plant environments through expertise in plant, science, pest control, and irrigation systems. Produce grown in gardens are to enrich the nutrition education program and the gardening education program. This staff member must like working with people, have an interest in supporting people with their abilities to grow healthy and fresh food, and be open to learning the needs of the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage growing areas, including outdoor growing areas including greenhouses and biodomes to grow plants for us in nutrition education classes and gardening education classes in Odessa/Midland and surrounding areas
Plants, transplants, fertilizers, applies chemicals, waters, prunes, and weeds beds and plant areas
Manage greenhouse/biodome operations
Manage compost area
Coordinate plant irrigation systems and program irrigation control computers
Pick up and dispose of litter
Assists in the work direction and on the job training of other personnel
Assists with gardening education classes to local food pantry clients
May assist in various maintenance activities as required
Ability to lift and carry over 50 pounds
May operate a motor vehicle to transport materials and equipment as appropriate
Manage time efficiently and work independently with minimal supervision
May irrigate, mow, rake, and trim grounds
Work with volunteer coordinators or other departments to arrange volunteers in gardening program
Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to work cooperatively with other staff, volunteers
Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures
This position requires frequent work on weekends and evenings
Physical stamina
Familiar with irrigation systems
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Degree in horticulture, landscaping, or other related field
2 years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
Must pass a background check
Valid Driver License
