Job Description
Patriot Broadband Technologies is seeking a Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to support underground fiber optic and broadband construction projects. This role is project based in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US regions and as the Horizontal Directional Drill Operator, you will need to travel to where the job site is located; overnights should be expected. The Horizontal Directional Drill Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently installing underground conduit while working closely with the foreman and drill crew in fast-paced field environments.

What You’ll Do
Operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar) for pilot bores, reaming, and pull-backs
Set up drilling equipment, tooling, and drill rods based on bore profiles and soil conditions
Monitor steering, depth, and pressures to maintain accurate bore alignment
Install conduit, pipe, or casing for underground fiber optic systems
Review utility locates and project plans; maintain safe clearance from existing utilities
Coordinate with locators to track bore head position and depth
Direct and communicate with drill crew during setup, drilling, and pull-back operations
Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, and complete drill logs
Assist with potholing, cleanup, and site restoration as needed
Follow all OSHA, state, and company safety policies at all times
What We’re Looking For
High School Diploma or GED
2+ years of HDD or heavy equipment operation experience in utility construction
Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices
Ability to read bore profiles, utility locates, and construction plans
Experience working around live utilities
Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain)
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT medical card
Pass pre-employment and random drug screenings
Willingness to travel daily or weekly as project needs require
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Physical & Work Environment
Lift up to 75 lbs and perform frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and walking
Work in confined, uneven, or rugged jobsite conditions
Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and weather
Must wear required PPE including safety boots, eye/hearing protection, gloves, and hard hat
