Role Details
As a community engagement leadership volunteer, you will be part of our committees of 10 to 15 volunteers who will work over the months to help us organize our fundraising events. Depending on the needs in your community, available roles could include committee lead, logistics, community outreach, volunteer lead, and social media.
Description
As a volunteer committee member, you will be responsible for:
Create a relationship with participants of hope.
Create a strategy for recruiting participants of hope with other committee members.
Identify local participants of hope who want to share their stories to spread the word about Relay.
Inform participants of hope about event details.
Send messages to participants of hope (pre-established messages at specific times).
Support and promote the fundraising efforts of participants of hope, where appropriate.
Organize the Hope Lounge: find activities to liven up the event and recognize the importance of participants of hope.
Plan the Lap of Hope (first lap).
Solicit participants of hope interested in sharing their Relay experiences on social media.
Ensure that participants of hope enjoy their experience and respond to their needs.
Why we need you
At CCS we are committed to improving the cancer experience by helping people with cancer live their lives more fully. The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life brings together communities united by the same goal of creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer. Relay is an opportunity to celebrate those who live and have lived in the face of cancer.
What we're looking for
You understand that cancer can change everything and that bringing community together in support of people who have been affected by cancer helps us prove that life is bigger than cancer.
You have the interpersonal skills to respond to a variety of requests from others on the committee and members of the public who are supporting Relay as suppliers, in-kind donors and volunteers.
You are organized and detail oriented but also appreciate and support the passion each of the committee leads has for their assigned area.
You are ready to do your best to make the event a safe, smooth and positive experience for everyone.
Our Investment
As an organization we will provide you with online resources, training and support to help you lead the Hope Participants portfolio.

You will also be supported by the Participant Engagement Lead, and the Relay Director, Community Engagement, a fellow volunteer, who will oversee all aspects around bringing more community members to Relay.

You will be part of the larger Relay community and have opportunity to learn and
mentor as you engage with CCS staff and volunteers.
Your commitment
This is an important leadership role. We are anticipating an ongoing level of commitment which will include regular monthly meetings with the entire committee.

Between committee meetings, you will be reaching out to previous participants of the survivor lap and interacting with other committee members to develop a list of new people to contact. You may engage with community groups to educate and promote the purpose of survivor involvement with Relay.

You are agreeing to initiate and respond with regular, consistent communication between the Participant Engagement Lead and other members of the team, including The Relay Director, Community Engagement.

As the event date approaches your time commitment will increase and on event day your leadership, as you continue to connect with the participants you have recruited, will be critical in creating the sense of accomplishment that everyone will go home with, knowing that their actions have created something bigger than cancer.
